Your kids school would send your child's AAP application package to the central committee. You can ask for a copy from your local AART. Basically you will be able to see what the central committee sees when they evaluate your child.

The package includes the HOPE rating (done by local school), as well as family referral forms and six work samples.

Thank you! Is it only by request?

Yes, you have to ask for the packet.

Exceptional in math, reading, visual art.

NNAT 160 COAT 144 Iready reading 92% math 99%.

Already preparing for appeal given the poor HOPE scale. DS is in Level II AAP, Above grade level for Lexia Core 5 and ST Math, Frankly I don't know why HOPE rating is so low.

I'm sorry, that sounds ridiculous. His scores should merit his entry alone.

I would ask to speak to his teacher. Not to attack them, but to say I'm concerned there are issues happening in the classroom that I'm not aware of. Scores like that merit an explanation. And yes, the smart, quiet kids are often overlooked.

Well OP doesn't even know if he got in or not, does she? This is the problem with asking for these packets before getting decisions, what are you going to do with them except speculate, speculate speculate? I guess this PP might want to schedule a WISC just in case.

PP here, I requested packet just to learn not just HOPE rating, but also what school work sample is like etc for future preparation because I have younger kids. I am going to wait for AAP decision before talking to his teacher. Not sure if WISC is needed because his test scores are high enough. Do I have time to do a WISC before appeal deadline (in May?)

Around this time last yr I scheduled WISC for April after spring break, when we expected to get results. My child had one outlier score on cogat that I knew wasn’t accurate (based on other testing and a known issue on that day for that section). If child got in, I would’ve canceled the test. There are a lot of people trying to get in for WISC testing after the results come out so I was glad to have it booked in advance. I also wanted testing info back with enough time that it could help inform the appeal write up.

Yes, this is just being proactive, especially if you already knew the GBRS was not going to help.

To be completely honest. Not very hopeful nor am I stressed. My child, clearly based on these 'standardized' test show he/she has no issues academically or socially. It's really just going to be a matter of favoritism and who's on the committee reviewing and I'll say it, how much diversity they 'need' for the current year.

Does the committee know the race/social economic background of a child? I guess they'd know if their last name is Wang or Sunjab. But nobody knows how diverse a Johnson is.

I think your DC will be fine - those HOPE scores are good enough. I also think that proactively blaming DEI/AA only increases your own anxiety. IME, parents who blame race for their child's lack of success are, in general, very toxic to themselves and their children.

They can tell from other indicators: there may be a few "Young Scholars" who are not URM, but the aim of the program is to reach URM, so that's a pretty good bet and is on the materials in the packet. Likewise, the packet includes references to whether the student is a "minority language" student and his or her ESOL status. HOPE also includes whether they are exceptionally talented in a "World Language," so that could be another indicator. So the committee members are generally able to discern whether the student is a minority and/or ESOL student.

Agreed. Your kid should get in, or you an appeal. I doubt you'll have to.

HOPE: 10 Always, 1 Often.

NNAT: 123

I didn’t know I could request the packet. Thanks to everyone. I am surprised to see my kid’s HOPE rating being so high. She’s cautious and quiet. No surprise that she got Often on leadership. It’s really nice to see teacher’s comments on her work samples from school. Her class teacher left soon after the school year started and had two long-term subs and a few short-term subs. It seems other teachers know her well.

What is the chance for her to get in? Her NNAT is not great and she said she couldn’t move the mouse to select the answer she wanted. She’s among the youngest in the class. Just thinking what to say if I need to file an appeal.

You won't have to appeal. That's the best HOPE score I've heard of! How are her iReady scores?
