Are Florida schools ruined now?

A Florida college degree with be worthless soon.

Florida Eliminates Sociology as a Core Course at Its Universities
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/24/us/florida-universities-sociology.html

Students can no longer take sociology to fulfill their core course requirements, Florida’s state university system ruled on Wednesday. Instead, its board of governors approved “a factual history course” as a replacement.

The decision by the 17-member board of governors came after fierce opposition from sociology professors in the university system, which includes the University of Florida and Florida State.

And it is the latest move by the administration of Gov. Ron DeSantis to challenge the education establishment, and what the governor portrayed as its liberal orthodoxy. Mr. DeSantis, a Republican, had tried to leverage his education record in his failed campaign for president.

I have plenty of complaints about FL schools, but am confident that we’ll muddle through without a sociology requirement.

What will it be next that they cancel?

Hope it's something your kids want to major in.

Why?

I don’t support what they’re doing.

So why are you intent on being an a**hole to my children?

Weird and more than a little creepy.

Why you so intent on dictatorships instead of democracy?

Why should your children have a choice of subjects, while the rights of others are stolen?

You are selfish.

What on earth are you talking about?

I’m a left leaning independent who voted against RD and DT at every opportunity.

You’ve completely lost the plot (and are exceedingly unpleasant, to boot).

New poster, but Sociology was not canceled. It's just not a requirement anymore. You can still major/minor in Sociology anywhere in Florida!!

Florida schools will be unacredited if 2024 goes GOP.

No one will hire students outside the state starting 2025.

Yes this is factual.

FL schools are roughly 2 years behind MD in terms of curriculum. (Comparing well-regarded MD private to similar FL private)

We also had a kid in MCPS, now at a FL public HS IB program. Overall publics seem similarly dysfunctional, though MCPS somewhat better.

On the whole, I'd say our kids are getting a lesser education, but will be in a better position for college admission.

We're trying to compensate for the former and take full advantage of the latter.

So now your kid will apply to where?
Instate Florida schools are heading to be unaccredited and no one will hire from there and no other colleges oos will accept from there.
How is this an "advantage"?

Do you feel Florida schools are teaching your children appropriately? Are you in favor of these draconian rules?

We want to move back to Florida retirement but not if it is now Mississippi.

Don't believe the partisan propaganda. FL schools are doing better than ever, it's one of the reasons for the continued migration there.

+10000. Yankees please stay away.

BS BS BS
Florida publics aways sucked. Now they are literal crap.

Banning the Dictionary idiots.

Ben Sasse running UF clearly you are braindead.

1. Very few kids from our area apply to highly selective colleges nationally. Kid will gain an admissions advantage.

2. Kid is winning all kinds of academic and other awards. Major advantage.

3. You’re grossly overstating the impact on state schools. With Bright Futures, UF will continue to attract many of Florida’s best/brightest and will continue to rank well.

With full free ride, not a bad fallback option.
