Vaping

Talk to me about vaping. Found out 16 year old DD has been vaping and trying to figure out how to handle it however I know nothing about it. She posted a video of herself blowing smoke in a photo sharing website and her older sister showed me. She doesn't know that I know yet...just trying to figure out how to best handle this. She's a good kid, goes to a private school and plays varsity field hockey. Never given us any trouble before this.

It is equivalent to smoking. Treat it the same way. Some of the vape liquids contain some pretty nasty stuff, so health-wise, its not great.

This
The kids think it's harmless because it doesn't contain nicotine, but it carries the same risks.

It seems to be a gateway to pot smoking. My older teen has friends who started vaping in 8th ad 9th. Now they are junior and seniors who are smoking pot. I have a zero tolerance policy for my kids (8th and 11th) just like I do for cigarettes and pot and any other drugs.

I would make it very clear to her that this is horrible for your body and lungs, ruins your skin and is particularly bad for athletes. If she is at all serious about fockey she should stop.

First, know that the older kids are vaping weed.
Second, it can give you mouth sores that don't heal and cause gum disease. It is a really stupid thing to do.

My problem will be with the picture posting.

Most e-juice contains nicotine. You should educate yourself before you try to give advice or explain something you don't understand.

So you are ok with the inhaling of unknown chemicals that came from who knows where?

The kids smoke pot in the vapes. She is not smoking tobacco. Geez.

I can't control what they inhale. Parents' saying bad stuff about it means nothing (I heard it all and my dad took me to show the lungs of a smoker in the med school he was teaching at). I don't smoke solely because I don't like it. People can choose what to do with their bodies.
Having pictures out in the open can hurt college and money earning abilities.
On a separate note, I do find interesting the research into how nicotine helps with Alzheimer's, and there is plenty of it in our family.

Op here: good to know. She's very serious about field hockey. She's in 10th grade and has had college scouts already starting to show interest. I'm just shocked that she'd do something so dumb and on top of that, post a video of it online! I monitor her IG And twitter but apparently there is a new photo sharing site I wasn't aware of and that's where this was posted. Her best friends family is very very wealthy and I know her best friends twin brother smokes pot so I wonder if it's coming from hanging out with them? Ugh. Guess I have to have a big talk about all of this with her.

My friend strongly believes that's the reason he has no short term memory is smoking pot from the age of 8 till 18. He might be right, who knows. He is doing well, but writes everything down and could never cram for exams, only seriously study. He told all the kids around about his experience, it made some impact.

This- I'm an old lady and I only use vapes ( the fake cigarette looking kind, not those big things I see at head shops) various THC tinctures/oils. Its weed plain and simple just not smoked as a plant, inhaled as an oil/essence. And very easily could be for your daughter too

Middle class hippy parents, who partied a lot. Kicked him out of the house after high school, so pot was no longer an option.
