White Lotus

Armond kind of reminds me of Lalo Salamanca from Better Call Saul. Clean cut, nice suits, the mustache, dapper and charming, but with a significant dark undercurrent and twisted way of getting what he wants.

I do not like Rachel. She’s playing the victim like her marriage happened to her, but she was a willing participant in marrying this man and his family. She already knew what they were like before marrying him, so I’m not understanding why she’s acting so surprised about his actions during their honeymoon. She is so beyond annoying.

Quinn is one of the most annoying characters on the show. Is he part midget? He has tiny short arms, like a T rex. He always acts stoned and clueless, highly immature. He looks like a 20-something yr old midget but acts like he’s 5. He is so gross to me.

Ha! I watched S1 a long time ago but I agree with your assessments! I did love the show though, and also S2.

I just finished Season 1. Very intriguing show, the storylines pulled me in, although I found it so weird that such wealthy people would go all the way to Hawaii paradise for vacation but not really do any real excursions or tour the island. The show was shallow in that sense, but I get that the focus was the resort itself. Still weird though.

The music added to the mystique and suspense but it was way too loud. I kept having to turn the tv volume down when the music was on, then turn it back up when they started talking. I hate when shows do that.

Lastly, I did not like the cinematography of the show, the dark retro lighting type of filming. Yes it added to the mysterious aura of the show like the music, but it was a bit overdone IMO.

I’m curious to see how S2 will compare.

Maybe I missed it but is Quinn supposed to be mentally challenged? In the show the mom says he’s 16, but he acts far younger than that while looking way older. He is my least favorite character on the show, even worse than hateful his sister and insecure weirdo dad.

The men in that family are disappointing and should not procreate.

For all fans of Season 2 who haven't seen this this hilarity from Aubrey Plaza and SNL:

Love that - the first time I watched it, I didn't even realize that was Aubrey Plaza!

I liked season 1 better than season 2. I liked season 2 but liked the first one much more. I liked the young wife and Connie Britton’s characters interactions. Molly Shannon was great too, and the complexity of the characters and good/bad in everyone. There were surprises that were believable as they grew out of the characters’ character.

I liked a movie by Mike White (White Lotus creator) with Ben Stiller called Brad’s Status. It was about middle age and insightful about middling success in life. Also his show on HBO with Laura Dern.

I'm 3 years late, but recently watched White Lotus and definitely am on the "Rachel is not hot" side of the fence. It just wasn't believable to me that Shane would have been that into Rachel - especially since they were crossing class lines.

Luckiest Girl Alive did this same story line much better. Like Shane, Luke was the elitely-educated laxer turned finance bro. Both men, as written, would have had their pick of women and I totally bought that Luke would have seen Ani across the room, have been attracted to her confidence and charisma, and would have accepted her lack of privileged upbringing. Not so much Shane and Rachel. Rachel was a bit derpy and boring from a personality perspective. Plus, she didn't have the best hair/makeup/costumes to help me believe Shane saw past the blandness to pure physical attraction either. Each time the show referred to her as hot it felt way more "tell" than "show." So likely a miscast and physical issue.

Of course, there's no way in Luckiest that Ani wouldn't have secured the bag by marrying Luke, but that's a whole different story. Girl wanted to massive ring, husband in finance, and summers in Nantucket too badly.

+1, I think you are supposed to accept it as a given that Rachel is gorgeous because Alexandra Daddario is drop dead gorgeous.

Also, Shane strikes me as both incredibly shallow and also not very smart, so it doesn't seem surprising to me at all that he would fall for the super hot, tall, media writer who no doubt thinks everything about his life is amazing because she's never had access to the same things. Like she's going to be the girl who is blown away by every date, every gift, every party, because she can't believe she's even allowed in the same room as any of it. Meanwhile, the women who actually are from Shane's background are going to have MUCH higher standards, will sniff out his weird relationship with his mom and his anger management issues immediately, and will not be won over by Shane just dropping cash on nice vacations or letting her buy whatever clothes/jewelry she wants. That aspect of the relationship would be considered a given for a woman from Shane's background, and they'd be looking closely at his actual personality and behavior, which is suspect.

I find Shane's and Rachel's relationship pretty believable even if it's not super common. They are both deeply flawed people and as with a lot of highly dysfunctional relationships, their flaws were part of their draw to one another. Rachel is insecure and is drawn to Shane's wealth and overconfidence, which she has naively viewed as a solution to her problem of being insecure and broke. But, twist, Shane is also deeply insecure and uses his wealth and looks to try and cover that up, turning him basically into a narcissist, who is enabled by his mother who is also a narcissist and does the same shit. The present the illusion of a gorgeous young couple who have it all when really they are both deeply broken, insecure people seeking validation in all the wrong places. Tale as old as time.

PP. Oh I know. And I - like some of the PPs who carried on for about 20 pages - simply disagree. In fact, if you google the actress's name, one of the first suggested posted is "...is overrated."

Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Interesting take. Hadn’t thought of this, but it’s spot on.

She’s definitely not drop dead gorgeous lol

She looks very very average

There’s women that are running laps around her lol

Scarlett Johansson
Natalie Portman
Anne Hathaway
Keira Knightley

To name a few

But she’s definitely a 7 at best

I think she was chosen because she is beautiful. But believable as a trophy wife with not much else going on.
