Why do people do this?

Anonymous
I told DH and the kids the other day to raid their closets and throw anything they no longer wanted or that they had outgrown into a pile for Goodwill. Among other things, DS(15) contributed all of his pajamas, while openly telling me he always sleeps naked now.

I have no strong opinion on this. It’s something that just wouldn’t occur to me to do, and DH doesn’t either. But over the years, I’ve noticed numerous discussions on DCUM about sleepwear, and unless the same few people are answering repeatedly, it seems that sleeping naked is considered very normal around here. If you do it regularly, what is so special about it? How old were you when you started (i.e. is it at all unusual for a 15yo)?

I’m really not a prude. Just wondering.

I don't like the feeling of clothes getting twisted around me at night (I must kick a lot). Any pants get bunched up around my knees and any shorts get bunched up around my thighs anyway, and a shirt bunches up around my waist.

It's hard to remember, but I'd say I started late teens probably.

I love pajamas and think they're super comfortable.

But I didn't know men wore pajamas. All of the guys I know (and exes) slept in boxers. DH has nice pajamas for Christmas morning and when we visit my parents. My parents think you should eat breakfast in PJs so that's what we do.

It feels good.

I enjoy being naked and I'm naked it's acceptable.

I will NEVER sleep naked. My neighbor had a house fire years ago during the night, and she barely escaped in time, but she had to flee naked. After witnessing that, I decided I would always sleep with clothes on!

If the neighbors want to see my dad bod while I run for my life, let em.

He should keep one or two for sleepovers, tho.

I sleep with just my panties for a couple reasons. First, I tend to toss/turn and I can't stand the feeling of clothing being all twisted. Second, I also tend to burrow myself under the blankets which leads me to get hot really easily even in the winter. I can't imagine being any hotter than I already get.

Why not do it? It's just natural and freeing and clothes are only for being presentable and braving the elements. I think I was about 19 when I started.

And camp/college....

What will he do when he goes to college? Assuming he lives in a dorm at some point.

OP. One step ahead of you on that one, but he just wears a t-shirt and shorts on those occasions. Pajamas were never "cool" enough for sleepovers.

My child started sleeping semi-naked around age 11. Sometimes he wears PJs, sometimes boxers, sometimes a tshirt and no bottoms, sometimes a bottom and no top, sometimes naked. He has towels that velcro around his waist to cover his privates, and he'll throw on one of those if he has to venture out of his room for anything (which is how I know his state of undress. Or, I'll go and tuck him in and he'll ask me to hand him his book from across the room because he "can't" get out of bed to go get it). When he sleeps away from home he wears PJ bottoms and sometimes a tshirt.

It's more comfortable. It lets him get his body temperature just right. It irritated his dad when he first started doing it. I imagine there might be more reasons why he does it.

I started as a teen. It just feels good. I keep a robe at the bottom of my bed or on the hook on the back of my door in case of fire.
