third trimester -- how much pelvic/ligament/vaginal pain is normal?

I have this too at 30 weeks. It's mostly when I walk, much worse some days than others. In the V area right around hairline, it actually hurts to press on it and walking is hard at times. Does this sound like what you guys are experiencing?

Wow so relieved to hear others are experiencing this. My primary issue is turning over at night (may have to try the recliner idea), but it seems to be getting progressively worse. Has anyone figured out anything to lessen the pain (other than the "rocking" moves someone suggested - I'm going to try that)? I did also read that lifting heavy objects will make it worse (makes sense), so I'll definitely be even more careful than usual. I'm signed up in a prenatal water aerobics class that I hope will help (just started that).

I'm willing to do anything to not be experiencing this every night - it's keeping me up half the night and then I'm keeping my husband up, so we're both getting pretty irritable, and everyone keeps reminding us that this is the time we're supposed to be sleeping (before the baby)!

It sounds like some are experiencing the normal ligament pains of pregnancy and it sounds like many of you have what a previous poster said; SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction) Don't let anyone tell you that this is just a normal part of pregnancy. Pregnacy alone can bring on many pains and discomforts but a severe case of SPD can be crippling. Talk to your doctors about it. My doctor kept blowing me off with your uterus is growing, or it's normal round ligament pains but I knew this was NOT normal. It is important that your labor nurses and doctor know of this condition because it can affect your delivery. Making sure to avoid certain labor positions is important so that you don't create long term problems. with l

So glad to have found this thread... I'm about 30 weeks into my second pregnancy and have been having pretty severe pain for about a month. Getting up from a seated position and taking the first few steps are excruciatingly painful. One strategy this time around is to rise from my chair, wait a few seconds and take a few deep breaths before taking that first step... partially to make sure I have my balance, and partially to prepare for the pain. I began this strategy after my legs almost collapsed under me after rising and stepping too quickly one time.

As an FYI to others... if your groin pain (inner-thigh vs. vagina/lower abdomen) is far worse in the morning than in the evening and if you have particular trouble lifting one of your legs, ask your doctor to please check you for an inguinal hernia. I developed one during my first pregnancy that was not diagnosed during the pregnancy. I had trouble articulating the pain to my doctor because it was all mixed up with the ligament issues, and he didn't really appreciate just how severe my pain was.

It turned out that we didn't diagnose the hernia until my 1st child was just about 15 lbs and the pain returned with a vengence... the answer was a surgery that prevented me from lifting her for 8 weeks and a LONG recovery. Could have been taken care of much earlier when she was much lighter and did not pose a lifting problem. So if you're having severe GROIN pain... make sure to communicate this as clearly as you can so you can be checked for a hernia.

Best wishes to all... I can't wait to walk up my stairs without death grips on the railings soon!

I had a LOT in the last month/month and a half. It felt like someone had been pounding on my pelvic bones with a baseball bat. My OB just said it's different for everyone!

Ha! That's exactly how I described it to DH. He got home from work last night to find me on the couch, icing my vagina because my pelvic bones were so achy.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this, but interested in knowing what others have done to relieve it rather than just bear with it through the remainder of their pregnancy. I'm only 25 weeks and can't live with this for another 15 straight weeks.

I've read that this can be treated by a chiropractor. Anyone got a good one to recommend (in DC or MD)? What about massage? Acupuncture? Yoga? Definitely interested in learning what I can do other than just suck it up!!

Also, I'm also most affected after sitting for long periods of time, which is bad when you spend 5-8 hours a day sitting in front of a computer. Is there a particular position or type of chair that helps? What about sitting on an exercise ball (which seems to be making it worse, not better)?

Hey folks! I haven't read the whole thread so perhaps this has been mentioned already. But what many of you are describing as round ligament pain (rolling over, lifting one leg separately from the other, etc). is actually something slightly different. Most likely it's a kind of pelvic separation (which is normal, if painful) and will be "cured" by having the baby.

There's a fantastic book that describes how, what and things you can do about it. I found it EXTREMELY helpful during both of my pregnancies and I believe I found it at the Montgomery Co. library.

Here's the link on Amazon:

Was just at a baby shower and this topic came up. One of the women referred to it as "vagina lightning" -- how perfect is that?!?

Anyways, I went through the round ligament pain a few weeks ago, it lasted for about 2 weeks steady and now I only get random ones, then I got a 'roid that swelled and leaked blood for over a week, and now I have the vaginal pain. Its like a dull ache most of the time but occasionally I get sharp ones. I thought it was just because I was carrying so low, but its good to hear that it will go away. Why does such a miracle have to be such a trial? The worst though are the charlie horses. I got 3 in a row the other night that had me off the bed and crying, and let me tell you I grew up on a farm and have pretty high pain tolerance, my fiance couldn't even move my foot to relieve it and he's a pretty strong guy. The good news is that my midwife said that she thought the charlie horses were much more painful than the actual labor. It is good though to know that these things are normal and we are not going through them alone. ; )

HAHA IF YOU THINK CHARLIE HORSES HURT MORE THAN LABOR THEN YOU ARE IN FOR A WILD RIDE MY FRIEND, GOOD LUCK. I HAD A NATURAL BIRTH AND 31 WEEKS ON MY SECOND. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A suggestion: my "pain" was in my lower left very low abdomen. I kept asking the OB if it was a foot stuck there. Wasn't helpful. The pain was worse when I was lying flat out on my back. So I couldn't sleep comfortably. It occurred to me that a recline might help. Saved my life. I slept in that recliner for the last trimester. And slept really well, too.

You revived a four year old thread to make a useless asshole comment? Gee thanks.

hi, all ladies experiencing beautiful phase of life..........
iam 25weeks now and iam also having such pains in pelvis ...i read somewhere that they are growth pains ,as the ligaments(round ligament) become smoother that pains occur..yes its hurting very much sometimes.....but dear no pains no gains..that are normal pains for some extent but if they are very severe then consult your doctor.i studied that there are some exercises called kegle's exercises ......it means just u contract ur pelvis towards ur self as like u r holding something with pelvis .......then by repeating this exercise most of the pain is relieved....some movements like lifting one leg or rolling on bed can also be easily done with the help of kegles ..try once u will feel the difference..it keeps ur pelvis stronger.
hope its helpful .all the best all of u..........be happy .take care.
