third trimester -- how much pelvic/ligament/vaginal pain is normal?

Anonymous
I had this too, with two pregnancies. The diagnosis is actually called pubic symphysis dysfunction (or disorder). Here's an interesting website about it with helpful suggestions and recommendations.

For the record, it's certainly not a plus size only problem!

Hang in there, ladeis!

4 more weeks to go and just started noticing the same pain while walking (or waddling) and tightness while sleeping and rolling over. Its miserable and painful but it will be oh so worth it in a few weeks.

and getting out of bed - or off the couch - is a ridiculous effort! it actually hurts to get out of bed. Or even roll from one side to the other. I feel like a turtle who's been knocked onto its back.

Good luck - you're not in this alone.

im in week 38 and i could have sworn all my round ligament pain was gone but evidently not because last week i had sex to help ripen my cervix and ever since ive been in thee worst pain..and braxton hicks dont make it any better... o and screw wimpering i was in so much pain last night i didnt go to sleep until 5:15am baby's father had to rub my stomach and sides until i couldnt hear anything anymore.... just relax youre near thee end and when you meet your baby it'll all be worth it

Im 33weeks and the pain everyone speaks of is the reason Im on this site...I wanted to search it before I went running to my doc...OMG!!! It feels like Ive had sex for 24hours straight!!! I have a 10yr old and do not remember this pain before. It is worse when Ive been sitting a long time and go to stand/walk...I completely understand why "we" waddle!!! Its going to be a long 6weeks if this doesnt ease up.

Oh my goodness, thanks so much to the person who "bumped" this thread! I read several pregnancy forums and hadn't come across anything about this before. What a relief!!!! I'm 39 weeks and started experiencing "arthritis of the vagina," as I jokingly describe it to my husband, about 2 weeks ago. Mentioned it to OB & midwife but they didn't really have any helpful reply, not even an "oh that's very common." I had chalked it up to the same joint achiness I started getting around the same time in my hands and feet, a result of fluid buildup, but from the helpful link someone posted above, sounds like this type of vaginal pain has a different cause.

I'm having the exact same symptoms as everyone else mentioned -- vaginal/inner-thigh pain when standing up from a seated position, lifting one leg, rolling over, etc. I can barely walk, especially in the morning. Its compounded by random pinching of the nerve in my right-thigh-groin, very painful, which seems to happen when baby is moving around. Like the other posters mentioned, I have seen some improvement when I go for a short walk. If I can tough out the first ten minutes, the last ten minutes are somewhat less painful. Walking in the grass seems to hurt less. On hard surfaces, the impact of each step is painful. At least I'm close to the end of this pregnancy. C'mon baby!

This was the worst part of my first pregnancy, and I'm not looking forward to it this time around. The pain was surprisingly high, and was worst when trying to sleep and get out of bed.

The good new is that it was gone, gone, GONE soon after giving birth, if not immediately. So that's something else to look forward to, for sure!

Good luck!

am so glad i came across this thread, as a fellow sufferer
i am 32 weeks down and am having these stabbing pains for the past 4 weeks in -
- about the place where the tummy meets the down-there hair line - a kind of internal pain
not sure if it is 'upper vaginal canal' pain or some ligament/muscle thing or a combination of both....
it happens esp when i walk, never when i sit or sleep....
my doc kept me on duvalidin for 10 days whcih is supposed to prevent premature labor and it scared me even more
read on one site tht it could be coz 'baby is low' or 'sign of cervix dilating' and actually freaked out
but reassuring to know that it does not really indicate labor as such,
i cant wait for the pregnancy to end but want the baby to come after a full term,

lots of pain is normal... like not being able to roll over, put on your underwear, walk or get up quickly.

w/ my first pregnancy I had central ligament pain so bad that I fell down and couldn't walk. It was by far the most painful part of my pregnancy (1st and 2nd trimester) and I thought "God, this can't be normal"... I thought for sure I was miscarrying. NOPE. Ligament pain. It sucks.

the pubic bones (in front) are held together with a ligament, when the hormone relaxin starts kicking in during pregnancy, your pubic bones move apart and this HURTS LIKE HELL. That's why it hurts to roll over, get up from seated, put your pants on and walk.

i had same pain last time and now 35 weeks and have it this time as well. it went away immediately after giving birth, although last time i kept telling the doctor that it felt like the baby was going to fall out from the pressure and it basically did at 37 weeks. a little nervous that it might happen again!
