Do you have any idea how hard it would be to hang and take town a huge banner every night??? She shouldn't have to! She should expect to not be robbed and have the other neighbors full support in catching and prosecuting this guy.
GUARANTEED you would feel different if he stole some high dollar thing from your yard.
Yeah. Generally in the district you will see the occasional public art support (donkey, elephant or panda), tasteful sculptures, native country flags (there are several lovely union jacks around town) or the American flag (including penants on the fourth) being displayed in the front yard/porch, or the occasional university flag (the Duke flag in Woodley Park comes to mind.) Halloween decorations are perfectly fine if they are tasteful and taken down the day after Halloween. Wreaths and candles are fine during holidays but should not be displayed past the new year. Menorahs, also, perfectly fine. Holiday lights are fine if done tastefully or put up by a service that does a good job.
Football banners? Not so much.
Of course we enjoy attending sporting events (as long as it's on the firm's dime) and we even feign interest in local teams (with the exception of hockey, which we genuinely enjoy.) However we do not display these sorts of things because they're gauche. The tacky and tasteless department also includes inspirational banners (ie "Happy Days" or "Celebrate Life" or some other sacchrine saying in pastel colors,) and lawn ornaments.
I'm sure other communities in the area, such as Burke, Springfield or Gaithersburg have the the "live and let live" attitude our Steelers fan seeks. However in D.C. it's not advisable to let "Your Freak Flag Fly," as TMBG say, or it will get stolen, repeatly.
