Someone in another thread posted a good explanation about the online business classes- basically, not exactly as bad as you think. If you do a search, you will probably find it.

UF has had online classes forever. In my day, it was videos high in the ceiling.

UF has more TA's. than Professors. Always has and now with many professors leaving in droves less class sections, business, eng, CS, Sciences, etc.

UF OOS tuition is ridiculous to pay.

OOS tuition is comparable to in state William and Mary and in state UVA.

Exactly, it’s insane to pay the same for Florida as UVa/william and Mary etc. . It’s one thing to go to a mega school because it’s basically free, quite another to pass up a better education for the same price.

UF outranks W&M and is nipping at the heels of UVA.

Only on the pages of US News. Where it does well because it has a lot of low income and first gen kids due to being basically free to instate kids with decent stats. As others said your student is going to have a disproportionate number of large classes, online classes and TAs. Which is fine if you are going for basically free, but not comparable to the education you’d get at William and Mary or UVA.

I believe that other rankings, such as the Wall Street Journal, also have UF pretty high. While UVA and William & Mary does not give a free education, they both meet need and end up being one of the cheapest college options for low income students. So you will have low income and first gen students at these schools as well.

Florida does well on return on investment rankings because it is cheap. That is entirely separate from the quality of the education. I’m not saying the education suffers because there are low income kids, it suffers, as other institutions of the same size, due to class sizes, use of TAs and remote learning, lack of mentoring, etc. ..there is no doubt it is fun and I’m sure kids enjoy four years there.

He and his best friend at UMD compared material/syllabus in 1st Accounting and Intro Finance and Florida was so much more rigorous and volume of work more than double. You get a great education at UF, it is not easy. The medical paths are especially well regarded. The dorms were not so nice but were fine. It didn’t both my son. He met lots of friends in the dorms. There is great school spirit and attendance and the career center is fantastic (way better than my other kids who are at lower ranked but still good school, think Clemson). The biggest negative is travel. I waited in the rental car line in Orlando for an hour one time to drive for three hours to Gainesville due to traffic. The second biggest negative is that many of the clubs are selective. There is still plenty of opportunities and again my kid is very happy. He mentioned that it is great to always be able to do things outside and he even has some quiet outside places he sometimes studies. He is in a fraternity but has many friends who aren’t. He says most of his friends feel fortunate to be at UF.

I have heard similiar things in terms of rigor at UF. The financial accounting class, in particular, is supposed to be brutal.

In comparison, here’s a student speaking about the business classes at UFlorida from Reddit:

First like 2 years are tons of online/hybrid. Mostly hybrid. So you can show up if you want but for me that means definitely not show up lol. Most of the professors talk slow so speeding them up does me wonders. Most business classes are easy As tbh if you do study edge or smokin notes (and now automatic tutoring for accounting). Make sure you use these services. I’m also in honors. It’s not been very useful for me because of the whole online/hybrid thing. The early registration doesn’t help me get good time slots that other majors are dying to get because their classes fill up. However if you got accepted into honors definitely do it. It’s barely any extra effort and you’ll complete the requirements to graduate with it naturally. Also the 1 credit uncommon reads are fun. Down the line in your last 2 years the early registration could help a bit too.N

Not insane, if you think that Florida will give you a better education and experience compared to these in state options. A lot kids do not want to attend UVA or William and Mary.

My kid got into all 3 (Florida, UVA and W&M). While UVA and W&M are great schools, my son preferred Florida for his college experience.

Well, at least he’ll have fun.

After visiting all three, he knew that Florida was where he wanted to be.

Congratulations to him!

I did notice on the various school instagram pages that a lot more kids are going to UF this year that prior years. Churchhill, for example, already posted 7 kids going! It is interesting more and more are choosing UF despite it getting much harder to get into (although that might be one reason why kids are choosing UF b/c it is difficult to get in). Also, given what is happening on many college campuses, UF might feel safer.

Not at the private schools, who wants to pay for an education that is half online. I hope people realize what they are actually getting.

I think that I saw at least one person from nearly every Fairfax County public high school (except McLean) commit to UF.

100% - and now the money can be used on actual education! I think a lot of people are looking for this kind of change (even if they are too afraid to admit it in person).

I don't think most people post though (so whatever you see will only be a small sampling of the total picture).

Good grief, not elementary-age students but adults - they can decide to take "woke" classes or not; what a scary progressive thought

It looks like not too many people are reading news about Desantis “reconstructing” public universities and what these changes will mean. Universities are having trouble keeping qualified professors and filling empty positions. His board is rejecting tenure for professors who were recommend. He misuses terms like indoctrination and woke which he vows to eliminate “left leaning” from the schools.

It's not appropriate for him to use public universities to increase his standing in the Republican Party.

I can understand if you’re from Florida on a budget, you’re going with the local public school. But anyone else I just don’t understand. Did anyone research who would be teaching the classes, how Desantis changes might affect your child, is Florida funding state of the art science and other tech facilities or is it all going to create a new school that is literally called the New School.

All I’m hearing is about sun and good parties.

A lot will depend upon their major, of course, and also on their ability to network. Sometimes, as you know, it's not just about connecting directly with a UF grad but also who they can introduce you to in the area. Yet with so many UF graduates in the DC area, your student will likely have many connections that can be made up here.

Yes, the lack of direct flights is annoying. But also, there are only two gates at the airport and it's VERY fast to get through security! And you sometimes see famous people on the plane after they've been to speak at UF.

Wow- I had no idea that there was a Gator Nation community in the DMV! Is there a Facebook group?

Dcgators.com

Tons of Gators here!

That's so good to know especially for the gators that want to return to the DMV after school- just nice to know that there is a decent alumni network here.

And get reacquainted with their old classmates who went to Yale, Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, Princeton and the brainiacs back from MIT and Call Tech. You’ll hear great party school! a million times.

Universities in Florida are excellent schools for people who have goals of public office in Florida, not so much people who want to work in DC.
