Anyone have their child attend University of Florida in recent years?

So, you don't actually have a kid there.

Well - he certainly is taking the care of the squatter problem. I like how he is actually DOING something about these issue that people care about.

Regarding the far away part- I drove to either Tampa or Orlando for fast and cheap flights. I just parked at the airport, but there are also charter buses that go to the airports from Gainesville.

I had a family member who went there, he has a rough time with law school admissions despite doing well at UF and good LSAT scores.

Law school admissions is very driven by LSAT and GPA. It's pretty close to a formula.

That's so fairly accurate. You can actually go to a low tier and school, but if you kill it on both the LSAT and your GPA, then you can definitely get into a top law school.

My child is seriously considering the school. The school was originally #2 on the list, but has now tied for #1 after going to Florida Days (admitted students day). Just loved the vibe so much. Our main concern is that it is so far away and that there are no direct flights to Gainesville. Also, with all of these college protests, I wonder how it will affect UF (which I believe is the most liberal of the Florida schools).

My daughter is a rising senior there, loves it and everything about being a gator. The expensive flights are an issue; she rarely flies out of Gainesville as it’s almost always cheaper to do Orlando or Jax even with sometimes having to Uber or Lyft there if no one can take her. Getting an internship this summer has been challenging, but I don’t think related to being from UF (she has two offers right now one in DMV). My own cons would be that the school is so big and it’s quite competitive for almost everything like clubs and such. Greek life has a very visible presence. Again, my daughter loves all that, but she definitely has had to put herself out there.

Someone in another thread posted a good explanation about the online business classes- basically, not exactly as bad as you think. If you do a search, you will probably find it.

UF has had online classes forever. In my day, it was videos high in the ceiling.

UF has more TA's. than Professors. Always has and now with many professors leaving in droves less class sections, business, eng, CS, Sciences, etc.

UF OOS tuition is ridiculous to pay.

How is housing there? We watched an admissions session and they said they don't guarantee housing for ANY year. I've never heard housing not being guaranteed for Freshman. Did your kid live on campus and, if so, for how long?

Mine lived on it freshman year - it was terrible. She was in Broward and I swear it had mold that made her sick. They did just build really nice new Honors dorms. There are plentiful nice and cheap apartments off campus.
Not many in her dorm were on a meal plan and most went to their Greek houses to eat and socialize. She found it a bit hard to make friends in the dorms.

I agree with your cons - well put. Students need to be very independent and self driven.

It’s a toss up to fly out of Gainesville versus one of the other airports if they don’t have a car. Usually by the time we Uber it’s mostly a wash.

Housing is not guaranteed, but you can basically get on campus housing if you want it. However, most people move off campus in the upper years bc there are so many affordable off campus apartments that are within walking distance ( and much nicer than the dorms).

Broward is not considered one of the nicer dorms, but many kids want it bc it is considered a very social dorm. Still, no matter how social a dorm is, you still need to put in some effort (i.e. take initiative and accept invites) just like any school to make friends.

OOS tuition is comparable to in state William and Mary and in state UVA.
