What happened to NYC?

I lived in NYC both before, during, and after that period. In fact, I lived in NYC in the 80's, and it was way more dangerous back then.
When I visit now, it's like looking at a gentrified suburb compared to what it was then.

The dramatic decreases in crime of the last 3 decades came under Republican mayors. Crime in ever category is up 35% since 2018.

I’ve had a good time every time I visit. There might be a few more crazy people in the subways, and more pot in the air, but otherwise I’ve had a lovely time.

Crime comes and goes in the Big Apple. I remember the days of Bernie Goetz.

It was COVID. To paraphrase the inimitable Tina Brown, Covid was the pin that popped the air out of NYC's balloon. It just hasn't been the same since, and now we have an international humanitarian crisis. I miss the pre-pandemic joie de vivre a lot.

People who live in their fearful bubbles watching Fox News need to get out a bit more. Scared of their own shadow.

So then you’re saying the NYT and WaPo are simply liars and gaslighting their readers. Now we know you’re a troll.

No, they are saying that if you notice the crime and the national guard in their subways, you're a racist gun slinger who is brainwashed. And the way to prove you're not brainwashed is to repeat the talking points they tell you.

+1 It's better to think it's safe nd not live in a fearful bubble. That way you'll just be surprised when you are mugged, stabbed, raped, or otherwise assaulted there.

Normal people with money left NYC during the pandemic and many never came back. Businesses that relied on their patronage closed and many people work from home for NY based industries in less expensive areas. What was left was people who couldn’t leave due to finances and mentally ill people. Due to the decrease in tax revenue services have been cut creating more city problems. Add in the migrant crisis and it all makes sense.

Just came back from a visit and it seems no different from when I lived there two decades ago, or any of the many intervening visits. More Latino loiterers, consistent with the migrant influx. My friend who lives there has mainly noticed the uptick in indigent Latinos but not much else. I did notice more police presence on the subway this time - like, moving along dude who was passed out on the platform instead of just letting him lay there.

Exactly. WSJ had an article about how those people moved right back to NYC.

This is a fact.

When you make the entire city a gun free zone, the only people with guns are the criminals, since the law abiding citizens won't have them. So you create a predator and prey environment, so yes the law abiding people only venture out when they can move in herds.
