Registered sex offenders picking up kids from school.

Anonymous
Does anyone know the rules on this? There is a registered sex offender that lives on my street, a few weeks ago I noticed him picking up a child from the elementry school up the street (I'm not sure if its his or not, I would assume so though). What is the rules and regulations on this and would you want to know as a parent if there was a sex offender around? I have not said anything to parents around me yet and I'm not sure if I should.

Depends on the offense and the judgment.

Is the offender one of the parents? If so, there is probably nothing you can do.

Was the offence related to children?

WTF?!? Oh, hell no!

Please say something if you are sure that this person is a registered offender. Print out the sheet from the database, make a thousand copies at Kinkos and hand them out to parents at drop-off and pickup.

If he is a parent, he needs to make other arrangements for his child to get home from school.

according to the sex offender page he was charged in 2007 with Indecent liberties with child by custodian.

Call the school and see what their policy is regarding the situation. Let them know that he is listed if they are not aware.

Wouldn't he have restrictions as part of his registration prohibiting him for being near schools? I'm not sure what the school policy could be unless they cross-check every person authorized to pick up against a list.

Report to legal and school authorities...passing out flyers is going to cause more problems for the child rather than solve the problem you want it to

Always make sure you know why first. You can end up on that list for many reasons.

I'd call the police nonemergency number first. Local police are supposed to stay in contact with registered sex offenders and make sure they are complying with their restrictions. The police should know what he's doing, and they can possibly tell you whether he's allowed to be at the school or not.

I could understand your concern if he was volunteering at the school in a capacity that would put him alone with other children. But how does him picking up his own child from school affect your child's safety? If the school sides with you (and in today's litigious, paranoid society, I can't imagine a school administrator being brave enough not to) can you imagine what his kid will feel when daddy has to explain why he can't pick them up from school any more. Will he have to pull the kid out of school altogether until alternate arrangements, arrangements that may not be as safe or comfortable to the child, can be made? Why would you do this to this kid who surely did not do anything wrong?

Call 1) the principal - they can know if it's the child's parent, but might not care to look into it and might just "okay okay" you, hang up the phone, and drop the ball. Hence, follow up with #2 . .

2) Call the police and speak with whoever monitors the sex offenders. They will absolutely follow up on it.

3) I would take it one step farther and spy and get the address where the man is taking that child. OMG.

+1
If it's for statutory rape, I don't care nor should someone be on a list for that.

There are laws about how many feet away they must stay from schools and playgrounds aren't there?

Holy hysteria!

There are pedophiles everywhere. Don't focus so much attention on a registry.
