cost of daycare for a 2 year old

we've been at 2 different preschools/daycares for kid 2-5 and both charged $250/week. One was in Arlington and one in Falls Church.

I know the cost is supposed to go down, but this has never been the case for us. With preschool there are more specials and activities and so the price increases plus they increase their fees every year. The cheapest years for us have been in an inhome infant daycare without a lot of frills. We are looking at preschools this year with approx. a 1:8 or 1:10 ratio on average in the $20,000 range including all activities for the year and lunch so about $1650 a month. Last year for our 2 year old was a bit less expensive. Not happy about the cost.

PP, what are some examples of specials or activities that cost extra? And what do the kids do whose parents don't pay for those during that time?

It depends on the preschool which is why we calculate a total cost and compare between that. Lunch can be included or extra. Before and after care can be included or extra, sometimes there is a fee for supplies, sometimes foreign language is included or extra, sometimes PE is included or extra, and then there are other specials like dance, art, phonics, help, music, you name it which can be included or extra too.

If the activities are included, all kids do them. If they are extra, they tend to have kids pulled out or switch classrooms. Most of the time it is free play or an art project during any afternoon special time which of course is needed so most parents I know only do afternoon special activities about 2 times a week.

We pay $350/week in Vienna for a good 2 year old program at a private school. The costs for daycare each year are rising much higher than my paycheck.

Wait, FL meaning Florida? With all due respect, that's a completely unhelpful and meaningless response to a question about daycare in downtown DC.

Can you just imagine though how great it would be if daycare were that cheap here!

I'm paying $1550 for a 2 yr old in Rockville, down from $1900 when DS was an infant. LOVE the school & right near my office so it's worth it to me.
