The house was supposed to be tear down but the new home building plans needed a minor zoning change due to something like a bay window overhang in a side yard... which the neighbor on that side would not support in front of BZA. So...the homeowner demolished most of the house except the required number of interior structural walls to qualify as a remodel and did so by-right with the results you see in previous posts. The Town could not legally stop him...

So, it was built as a colossal FU to the neighbor and Town of Vienna? Only in Vienna...of course, Taco Bell corporate had to have a two color sign custom made to adhere to TOV's strict color standards.

Vienna, Virginia...for all of your mattress, banking, pharmaceutical and manicure needs!

FYI, the neighborhood is changing. There are several new builds on that street, and the small house pictured next door is a pending tear-down soon to be replaced with something bigger. You may not like this particular house, but matching the existing neighborhood was not a winning strategy either. In 10 years, all the houses on that street will be big (new or remodeled) and this one will not look that out of place.

I fully expect that the house pictured will be torn down and replaced, eventually.

There's an equally tacky, over-embellished mini Mc Mansion on Chain Bridge Road, just blocks away from the Oakton Giant that has a For Sale/Build Your Home Here sign. The house was built seven years ago.

is that the one without a garage and they whore it out to fake estate sales of crappy reprinted art and cheap furniture?

Well, at least they aren't growing corn in the front yard.

I like that round tower thing off to the side. I wonder why they left the front of the house so flat though.

PP here. I don't know, but will drive by tomorrow and note the address. I remember watching that house being built...it took forever.

And, right next door is this beauty:

501 Windover ave nw

Same "architect" as next door.

If I had the cash, I'd buy both properties, bulldoze both houses and make a park. I would be a vast improvement.

501 is vacant and overgrown and one hot mess.

Oh dear God. No.

My thoughts exactly!! I'd definitely worry about the quality of construction and hope those workmen knew what they were doing!

There's has got to be a background story on this one too...it sat empty and half-built for a long time...

PP here. From what I've heard and observed, these houses (503 and 501) were someone's idea of a house flip/investment. Very quickly, the money ran out and only 503 was completed (if you can call it that) and next door, 501 was *only* finished enough to comply withzoning. Inside, it is empty; no appliances, no trim, no flooring, no toilet, etc. It was then marketed to CUSTOMIZE! Finish to your liking!!!! Three or four different realtors listed the house. Owner then thought landscaping would help. Dozens of spindly trees we're delivered and plopped, root ball and all, along the back edge of the property. shrubs, again dozens, we're planted along the front edge of the property.

Not unusual to drive by and see the front door open; Vienna police have reported that it was a party spot...kids were regularly coming in and hanging out, drinking, etc.

Now, the house is off the market....believe me, I fantasize about having the money to buy these blighted properties and bulldozing them into oblivion...I'd personally operate the bulldozer and wrecking ball.

Oh come on, the santa fe style on a colonial (or is it a brick arts and crafts) home is where it's at. It's the roman columns that truly are the finishing touch.

This house has been there for at least 8 years (when we moved to Fairfax and started using this street as a cut-through) so it's not exactly news.

And while I completely agree that it's hideous, it's not a developer infill -- it's just a lot owner with absolutely no taste, which is hard to legislate against no matter where you are (at least without an HOA).

Thanks, Captain Obvious, for your worthwhile contributions and astute observations.
