Arlington School Board candidates

Kathleen #1

Larry #2 (not terribly impressed with him but at least he has some quals and actual positions on issues based on engagement and experience in APS)

This is how I'm voting, except swap them! My only concern is Kathleen seems a little one-dimensional (she knows A LOT about special education but seems a little loose on the some other stuff). She definitely deserves to be on the board though.

+1

The bar is low and only these two clear it.

He’s not trying to inflate his credentials either. Since she already has all the endorsements, Zuraya should just be honest she doesn’t have much experience.

But Zuraya does have experience, she worked at Meta, the parent company of FB and Instagram.

“Meta the company that owns Facebook and Instagram has for years relied on both social media platforms to keep children and teenagers engaged for as long as possible in order to gather personal data and sell it to advertisers, a group of state prosecutors alleged in a recently unsealed complaint.

Attorneys general in 33 states filed a federal lawsuit against Meta in October, although the details at the time were not immediately released. The complaint, unsealed Wednesday, unveils more specifics, such as allegations from state prosecutors that Meta harmed young users on Facebook and Instagram through the use of highly manipulative algorithms and technological tools. that was accused by attorney generals in 33 states for creating addictive technology for youth to keep them hooked “

This is ridiculous. I’m voting for Kathleen and Chen but don’t need to drag Zuraya through the mud.

And we’re surprised no one more qualified wants to run for school board.

What did Zuraya do at Meta? She's a lobbyist right?

+1

DP, not a Zuraya fan or booster.

I’m actually okay with lobbyists running for SB. APS could use some help in that department down in Richmond rn.

And let’s not pretend that some of you Arlington parents aren’t federal/state lobbyists too. APE seems to have a lot of them spreading tears about “learning loss”

APE itself is a lobbying org now (anti-education).

Can you explain how APE is anti education? I don't like them, just wasn't aware that this is their new thing.

Republican plan:
1. defund public schools (Hi Youngkin! How’s that budget?)
2. crap on then relentlessly to lower public opinion and overwhelm the school district (APE, etc)
3. Push for vouchers to subsidize private school for their kids

APE seems to have a lot of their kids in private schools, but still complain and engage on public school issues in very negative ways. They can't say one good thing about APS, just finding fault in everything. Their platform is not so different from IWF, PDE and Moms for Liberty, but without the culture wars because they are actually smart and know that Arlington would kick them out if they started to talk about banning books and discriminating against trans kids. But trust, many in their "tent" feel that way. Some of their first members already work for these organizations, and I wouldn't be surprised if APE coordinates with those extremist organizations already on the down low.

They just want to cause enough chaos at APS to defund us too so that they can get that voucher to send their kids to schools they're already going to. Or want to and just don't have the money to do so.

Exactly.

At a minimum, they engaged with many of them on social media.

They are dangerous because they are smart and are playing the long game.

This is why I don't think Chen is an APE plant. They're smart enough to know how to push him through a school board caucus with 2 open seats. He barely has signs out. He doesn't have their endorsement or donations from their members. Nothing telling their members to vote for him, nothing from Miranda.

Miranda’s house has multiple KC signs. She must be an APE plant.

Not really sure why APE is promoting Kathleen. Just look at Chen’s website. They mirror each other. If they do believe their hype, they need to endorse Chen. He’s the “learning loss” candidate!

Probably they know Kathleen is going to win, so they’re kissing up to her now.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day

Seems like more and more people have to say that about APE. Maybe the clock is fixed?

That's how these snakes work. They throw out some freebies to try to build a little credibility and embed themselves in the community.

They push RWNJ propaganda.

I think the crazies on here don’t understand how elections work.

To be fair, the ONLY reason Miranda got elected was because her opponent was even worse. And if the ACDC didn’t rule all, an independent who had even Zuraya’s or Chen’s level of experience would have trounced her in the general.

No one likes her except APE. I have accepted that only four school board members truly serve me and my children.

This whole post hurt because it's true. Miranda has no business being on the school board.

Giving students a 50 when they don’t turn something in is complete nonsense. They’re right to raise alarms on this.

Why anyone in administration listens to APE is beyond me. They say nice things to our faces and then testify on the Hill, get quoted in WaPo and quietly work with RW think tanks doing the opposite. I feel like in a few years I'm going to be saying "I told you so" as APS gets defunded, not by Republicans but by our neighbors pretending to be Democrats to get footholds in all power strongholds.

Anyone that knows Kathleen should encourage her to get out of their FB group. It will do no good for her campaign. Listen to them, but don't give them any more legitimacy than they already lack.

+1 And tell her to stop posting pics of her and Miranda. She's still my first choice, but wondering who she listens to if she's in their FB group and she's posting pictures with her.

#2 is very reluctantly going to Larry. I'm not ranking anyone else.

There are only three endorsements that should matter in Arlington's SB races: AEA - which I'm still side-eyeing why Kathleen didn't get an endorsement. ASHPA - have they even weighed in yet? If there was any endorsement Zuraya should have gotten, it's them. But they're pretty quiet. Hmmm. And finally Equality Arlington - they are pretty quiet too this round.

The rest is just noise. Sierra Club is laughable. What do they do for APS and public schools in general?

Very telling that ASHPA has not endorsed Zuraya.

Miranda should endorse Kathleen then.

Has AEA sorted themselves out as an organization? I know they were a hot mess in 2022, haven't really been following along since. I don't necessarily trust them to represent what most teachers want.

What right wing initiatives are they supporting? I subscribe to their newsletter, and I support what I’m seeing. I don’t want my kids on devices, and I want the school system to focus on excellence in education instead of whatever fad they are cooking up. Kids can still feel “included” and “partners” in an excellent school system that has high expectations for them.

Kathleen got her start in sped but then she branched out. She is Vice Chair of the Strategic Plan Committee.

Why does APE choose to do this on Fox news though, of all places? And it's in a Fox segment where it's lumped together with explicit mentions of critical race theory, sexual education, and parents rights.

This is telling. APE has a political agenda and not one that is in line with most of our values in Arlington.
