Arlington School Board candidates

I will admit I have seen/read their newsletters because I’m interested in hearing all point of views before making judgements and I don’t find all they are asking for that out of line. I won’t quote exactly, because I don’t keep up that closely, so that is why I was looking for solid data on what they have done. But saying they have republican buddies and they didn’t write an article criticizing youngkin (did they write an article supporting him?) is pretty weak. This is the overall problem with APS no one is willing to have open and meaningful discussions. It’s all black and white. You are either a woke snowflake or a trumpster.

I’m all about open discussions. But that requires people engaging in good faith.

Go read their newsletters. They go deep into budget criticisms. But then have nothing to say when the governor cuts the budget?

That’s just one of many examples.

You also need to serve on an advisory committee to see their true colors. APE members make them miserable. They don't respect the staff that attends these meetings, pushing their own agenda on everyone else. Or just go off agenda to make these meetings totally unproductive. Unless you fall lockstep with their priorities, you're silenced and gaslighted. Especially if they are in a leadership position.

You mean the guy who screamed over others at SB meetings behaves poorly in committee meetings? Shocker.

He’s not trying to inflate his credentials either. Since she already has all the endorsements, Zuraya should just be honest she doesn’t have much experience.

But Zuraya does have experience, she worked at Meta, the parent company of FB and Instagram.

“Meta the company that owns Facebook and Instagram has for years relied on both social media platforms to keep children and teenagers engaged for as long as possible in order to gather personal data and sell it to advertisers, a group of state prosecutors alleged in a recently unsealed complaint.

Attorneys general in 33 states filed a federal lawsuit against Meta in October, although the details at the time were not immediately released. The complaint, unsealed Wednesday, unveils more specifics, such as allegations from state prosecutors that Meta harmed young users on Facebook and Instagram through the use of highly manipulative algorithms and technological tools. that was accused by attorney generals in 33 states for creating addictive technology for youth to keep them hooked “

This is ridiculous. I’m voting for Kathleen and Chen but don’t need to drag Zuraya through the mud.

And we’re surprised no one more qualified wants to run for school board.

What did Zuraya do at Meta? She's a lobbyist right?

+1

DP, not a Zuraya fan or booster.

I’m actually okay with lobbyists running for SB. APS could use some help in that department down in Richmond rn.

And let’s not pretend that some of you Arlington parents aren’t federal/state lobbyists too. APE seems to have a lot of them spreading tears about “learning loss”

APE itself is a lobbying org now (anti-education).

Can you explain how APE is anti education? I don't like them, just wasn't aware that this is their new thing.

Republican plan:
1. defund public schools (Hi Youngkin! How’s that budget?)
2. crap on then relentlessly to lower public opinion and overwhelm the school district (APE, etc)
3. Push for vouchers to subsidize private school for their kids

Ive never seen APE support any of these. Can you show explains? I’m truly curious. The last I heard /saw they were promoting less Tech use (which I’m for) and questioning the retake policy, which did end up being a disaster and APS changed. I know dcumers love to hate ape but I’m genuinely curious to see when ape has promoted any of this.

i remember one guy in that FB APS group would promote school choice all the time but he had no affiliation with APE. So where are you seeing this?

Voucher guy was definitely in APE

No, voucher guy made a big stink about how he was NOT APE because they don’t support school choice.

Voucher guy was definitely in APE in 2020-21. There whole "big tent" encompassed school choice advocates, anti-trans activists and book banners. Just because they aren't promoting any of that now doesn't mean that once they get some actual power on the SB that these issues won't come up again from their membership.

No, you are incorrect. I remember him trolling APE posts about them not being pro-school choice.

#2 is very reluctantly going to Larry. I'm not ranking anyone else.

There are only three endorsements that should matter in Arlington's SB races: AEA - which I'm still side-eyeing why Kathleen didn't get an endorsement. ASHPA - have they even weighed in yet? If there was any endorsement Zuraya should have gotten, it's them. But they're pretty quiet. Hmmm. And finally Equality Arlington - they are pretty quiet too this round.

The rest is just noise. Sierra Club is laughable. What do they do for APS and public schools in general?

ASHPA also getting more right wing. They endorsed Miranda and they’re pro-SRO now.

Or maybe being pro-SRO isn’t right wing? You could put me in that camp. Although if I recall Miranda was very anti-SRO.

You are either remembering wrong or trying to gaslight. APE does a lot of that.

Would someone kindly explain what "ASHPA" is?

Arlington Schools Hispanic Parents Association. Started by former School Board chair Tannia Talento and community member Janeth Valenzuela. They mostly focus on helping Hispanic families overcome the language barrier to be able to interact with the school system. They also helped get Latinos vaccinated during Covid.

You should ignore most of the ranting on this site. Most people, including all 4 candidates, are nice people who are trying to help out and do a thankless job. While we may have preferences and disagreements, are their own people who care about our schools, our students, and our teachers.

Interesting input. That's exactly what Garvey did and she was effing terrible on the school board.

Her platform is the most middle of the road saying nothing of substance.

Yes! She's a very smooth talker, but her real skill is talking without really saying anything.

I know more about her endorsements than her actual platform. She's gunning for higher office. I don't even get the impression that she cares much about APS.
