Westfield HS-Student murdered

Was Michelle Reid standing by the police chief at a press conference about the Nov 20 incident where a FCPS student died and 5 others injuried on a school day morning in McLean due to excessive speed and drunk driving? FCPS would deploy grief counselors to affected schools, etc, but to stand next to the police chief at press conference?

There was no such incident in McLean.

DP It was merrifield but I don’t remember if she said anything. Same with the accident in Burke last year that affected south county.

Right? Why don't those poor kids go to Herndon HS?

Westfield is in an odd location -not really close to a lot of dense neighborhoods--and I believe when they rezoned that area they were trying to balance out the FARMS kids percentages.

Its basically in Loudoun and surrounded by car lots and Cox Farm. There is nothing out there. I guess that's why the land was still open.

Westfield was opened in 2000. It’s 24 years old at this point. There are definitely dense subdivisions fielding into Westfield. There are lots of single family and townhomes, but not many apartments. Of course that is changing some with the development of the area.

Yes, but those neighborhoods are really not near Westfield. Look at a map. The school is in an industrial area. The only neighborhood walkable to Westfield is the trailer park off Route 50. That's why its boundary is really strange.

No. Westfield's boundary is "really strange" because the land for West County - aka Carson - HS was gifted to the Saudis. And, since then, FCPS has blundered along expanding HSes rather than building ones.

Where did you read that?

I didn’t read it. I am a teacher and kids talk.

DP. I have kids in a neighboring school. They told me it was gang related too. Online stories through some sort of story board at school has a bunch of RIPs. My kids say a lot of students knew the kids involved. Heard similar things from parents at another nearby school.

Gangs and drugs go together.

DD has friends who knew him and says it’s not surprising given the company he kept. Her guess is also drugs/gang.

🤷‍♀️

So? Drugs and lawyers and finance types also go together.

OP, now that we have more facts, are you back to feeling “safe”? Or are you still worried?

Are you really asking if someone thinks their kid is safer after the suspect had turned himself in, versus the day the suspect was still roaming Fairfax and dozens of cops were at her kid's school, interviewing kids trying to find him? What a dumb question.

Where do we find out info about ongoing gang activity at Westfield HS and the surrounding area?

There is at least one gang member in every school - see article from 2004

There are some absolute gems in that article:

"When asked why residents of Great Falls never hear of gang activity in their community, Vencak told those at the meeting there might not be incidents occurring at schools, but the members are there." [They were salivating to get told by the police that Herndon kids were venturing over into their neighborhoods, and they didn't get what they wanted.]

"A gang is defined as three or more people that hang out in a group in a particular area, wearing the same sort of clothing or colors, Pengelly said."

So now you know why there is at least one gang member at Langley. Forget about MS-13, those Crazy Mean Girls hanging out in the parking lot will make your child's life total hell.
