Where are your UNDER 1400 SAT kids going?

Anonymous
Mine took the ACT once, score about equivalent to a 1200 and didn't want to re-take. 3.5 from a private school. Applied TO and will be attending SMU. She very much wanted not to be at a tiny campus and we wanted smaller class sizes.

Other admits:
Indiana University
Loyola of MD (merit offer)
Miami of Ohio (merit offer)
Towson

Also considered Pitt, Fairfield, St Josephs, College of Charleston

Maybe this is true for public school students but it’s not that easy to have such a high gpa in private school.

In at UVA, UCSD, UCSB - offered significant merit at two 'Likely' schools.

My ds is considering all of these. Any merit at them? What were grades and score?

No merit at any of these - 4.2 W / 1320 but applied TO (UC schools won't accept or consider test scores)

Had some very interesting ECs with a lot of leadership roles

All 3 of those schools have reputation for little to no merit. UVA has great need based aid. UC's have almost no need based aid OOS either.

There are lots of great schools where a kid can get merit if that's what you're seeking, but the UC schools aren't on that list unless your kid is a CA resident.

But what PP said is absolutely true. You can go TO but not gpa optional. Better to have a low test score than a low gpa.

31 ACT which is equivalent to a 1400 I think.

UGA (accepted no merit, rejected from honors)
Indiana (accepted with 8k/year merit, no honors)
U of South Carolina (accepted, Capstone program, 90k plus over 4 years merit, equivalent to instate tuition and additional $500/year)

Applied to 4 other schools without scores. Was WL at two, merit + honors at another.

Attending a school where they were accepted TO but no merit.

She got into almost all she applied to: American, JMU, George Mason, Radnor, VCU. A couple others I can't remember. She ended up choosing Towson and got 2 k in merit aid. She loves it there. She was swiftly rejected by Montclair State in nj in the dance department (though accepted to the school). They are one of the most competitive dance programs in part because all dance majors pay in state tuition even from other states. And it's just a well known program. I had hoped she would apply to small or medium liberal arts colleges on the east coast with better names and status. That's not where the best dance programs were. She knew that and did what she wanted. And it served her well, I'm proud she followed her own plan.

Congrats! Towson’s dance program is awesome. I have a dancer too and she will be looking at some of the same schools. What made you decide on Towson versus JMU? We’re looking at both, and UMD.

Did any of you consider training in NYC? Maybe Alvin Ailey or ABT?

Ailey has a BFA program with Fordham. They offer basically the same training to their 3 year certificate students-they get the dance training, but not a college degree at the end.

I have seen people make both choices. It depends what you are hoping to do. If you go for training alone, you have to find an apartment and figure out food, etc.

+1

If a kid has a mental breakdown, good luck. There’s little mercy.

Mine is going to UVA (no kidding and no, not an athlete).

My kid wo was well under 1400 get admitted to seven schools, ranked 34-100 (among national LAC's, which is what she wanted).

Many of the schools were test optional.

She got generous aid at most of them (like half tuition paid).

She did not get into her reaches (which were considerably more highly ranked).
