where is KSAC/RMSC going?

Could someone please post days and locations for the senior (non-advanced) group? My HS swimmer was considering switching teams to RMSC-KSAC next year for various reasons but the facility closure is obviously a major negative. TIA.

They are mostly headed to silver spring, the new pool. The coaches are fantastic. Remember there are limited spots and only when someone leaves so don’t get your hopes up.

I’m so sorry, PP. I was surprised that some groups will practice 80% at SS, while for other groups the practices are much more evenly distributed across locations that might work for most families. Wonder if coach location preference played a role.

Primary driver was trying to keep the groups same/similar practice times/days. I have been told that there were some inaccuracies and omissions in this initial memo(dryland times not listed) and that there should be an update in the not too distant future. But, it won't be drastically different from what you see.

Our practice times are all over the place. Nice to keep the times but if you have to drive 30 minutes, that isn't going to work for everyone. If we had to go to Gaithersburg no way we could make it at the same time.

I don't know that there realistically is/was a solution that would "work for everyone" other than the status-quo...

At least there is clarity and folks can make informed decisions.

If anyone has some first-hand experience of the various/best parking options and costs at Silver Spring, I'd love to hear them...I believe county parking in SS is a dollar an hour(?)

They should open the open slots in other pools to the current families at ksac to start.

Except there aren't really any slots to open at the other sites - all the locations are pretty much at capacity as is.

But, in any given year, there are some kids that do shift around to different sites and this year will be no different other than there could be in increase in the number of families similar to yours who might want too switch out of KSAC. I don't know what the process entails but I think others have said that you need to attend the July try out for that site. Probably something you want to ask about sooner rather than later.

Good luck and report back here if you find out any details on availability and transfer process.

There are always kids who leave each group and they could make some larger with more coaches, if enough families want a different location. They should have done a poll with families and looked at all the options. This might work well for us, but I cannot imagine for most.

This is not a problem that can be solved by just "more coaches" - it's a resource issue: the pool/lanes/times - and this resource is limited. All the sites and groups are at capacity; they are typically working with 6 lanes so once they get beyond 35-40 kids the idle time and crowding in water goes way up. See the many other threads here discussing this very problem.

I'm sure KSAC are all very fine families and hope things work out for everyone but I'm not keen on degrading our team's practices with an influx of swimmers from KSAC; just being honest and I'm sure if we're all completely honest and the shoe was on the other foot, you'd feel the same way and I wouldn't blame you. Any accommodation should be strictly managed on a 1 out 1 in basis and take kids only if there is room but not over-pack the roster so that it then becomes sub-optimal for everyone.

I completely agree with all of this (current KSAC family)

That’s my understanding- $1 per hr. For a totally unrelated activity at SSRAC, we were told to park at the county-owned garage at 8530 Cameron St. From Google maps, it looks like it’s a very large garage that’s directly across the street from the pool (one end of the garage is, at least).

+1 We parked at the Cameron St. garage recently and it was $1 per hour and very close to SSRAC. It was a Saturday afternoon, the pool was packed with kids during rec swim and the garage had plenty of space.

Ksac has 6-10 kids per lane as normal. We are a Ksac family. It’s a huge issue for many. It will be fine for us but we got lucky. But my child cannot move up groups or we cannot make it work.

Yes! Same thing at the other sites as well. I don't see how PP thinks it would be workable to just plop a bunch of KSAC swimmers in with the already at, or over capacity lanes at any given practice at any of the sites and it would somehow be fine.

Minis: hTuesday Thursday at JCC; Monday and Sunday at Silver Spring. (Theres also a Friday practice on the schedule but parents were informed it was a typo)

Thank you! I don’t like the split locations. Why can’t they keep each group to just one location?

There will be some open spots as kids leave. They should offer those to KSAC kids first, then do try outs.

I'm assuming it is to reduce the burden if one location is not convenient?

Why? I mean, I would love it if all of my kids practices were at the most convenient location for me, but this way there’s at least some practices that are convenient for most families. I think it’s a smart idea. Several PPs above lamented that their kid’s group is practicing mainly at one very inconvenient location for them and they’ll have to switch clubs. Splitting it up makes this scenario much less likely to be the case.

I’ve gotta say- this hasn’t been my observation and must vary across groups. I’ve watched many of my own child’s practices and observed the group directly after theirs (while waiting for my child) and I’ve never once seen more than 6 to a lane at KSAC (typically closer to 4). Are some groups just more crowded than others?

Switching clubs is not an option as many our competitive and those of our kids who are not super competitive may not be able to get slots elsewhere.

Going to the other side of the county for some is not realistic. Ksac is a good mid point. But, going germantown or Gaithersburg to silver spring or vice versa is a nightmare.
