I think the crazies on here don’t understand how elections work. |
She's Senior Director of Government Affairs. That is a LOBBYIST.https://chci.org/staff-and-leadership/zuraya-tapia-hadley/ |
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day |
Given her history of working for a social media company and currently an entertainment platform, it does seem relevant to ask her stance on device usage in the classroom and in our schools. Social media companies have a huge financial incentive for kids to stay on their devices as long as possible, including during the school day. From a PBS article “ "Although social media platforms may claim that they can self-regulate their practices to reduce the harms to young people, they have yet to do so, and our study suggests they have overwhelming financial incentives to continue to delay taking meaningful steps to protect children," said Bryn Austin, a professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Harvard and a senior author on the study….The platforms themselves don't make public how much money they earn from minors.” The study went on to estimate $11 billion is made off of youth targeted ads. Is Zuraya a key player in a conspiracy to increase ad clicks during the school day? Doubtful ! But has her experience at these companies impacted her thinking on the subject? Has she drank the company kool-aid and thinks devices in schools aren’t a big issue? Mental health workers, educators, pediatricians, even the surgeon general are all saying devices are wreaking havoc on the education system and the social/mental health of our youth, yet we can’t seem to get rid of them or come up with real solutions! How will Zuraya’s work with these social media companies impact her decision making on school board for what many educators would say is one of the biggest impediments to learning right now? |
Republican plan: 1. defund public schools (Hi Youngkin! How’s that budget?) 2. crap on then relentlessly to lower public opinion and overwhelm the school district (APE, etc) 3. Push for vouchers to subsidize private school for their kids |
Also, I honestly don't care about phones in schools. At all. And if you do, why don't you contact the current school board and ask for a policy regarding cell phone use policy like a normal person.
It wouldn't surprise me if APS has a student cellphone use policy anyway. Just keep them in a locker during the school day. Easy. I agree with the poster upthread. Of all of the things I don't like about Zuraya, the fact that she *might* be a lobbyist isn't one of them. |
Doesn't Chen work in technology too? Conspiracy theorist says he must be running for the school board to put iPads and iPhones in Preschoolers hands. Let's make up -ish about him too. Get them started early so that they can work for his company in 12 years like the good drones they are. |
If you honestly don’t care about phones in schools, then you have no idea what is happening in schools. Read Jonathan Haidt’s piece in The Atlantic “Get Phones Out Of Schools Now” to get an idea of the impact they are having on secondary students.https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/06/ban-smartphones-phone-free-schools-social-media/674304/ |
You know why I think Chen is an APE plant? Because of all of these people trying to find any little sliver to slander Zuraya, from her endorsements to her previous employer.
Shows that Chen really doesn’t have anything going for him other than some words and four donations. I read his website and he’s all about APE priorities. They should go ahead and endorse him then. |
Exactly. At a minimum, they engaged with many of them on social media. They are dangerous because they are smart and are playing the long game. |
This is why I don't think Chen is an APE plant. They're smart enough to know how to push him through a school board caucus with 2 open seats. He barely has signs out. He doesn't have their endorsement or donations from their members. Nothing telling their members to vote for him, nothing from Miranda. |
+1 If trashing candidates on DCUM could sway the caucus, Miranda would never have gotten elected. |
Voted online yesterday. Super fast and easy.
Kathleen #1 Larry #2 (not terribly impressed with him but at least he has some quals and actual positions on issues based on engagement and experience in APS) |
To be fair, the ONLY reason Miranda got elected was because her opponent was even worse. And if the ACDC didn’t rule all, an independent who had even Zuraya’s or Chen’s level of experience would have trounced her in the general. No one likes her except APE. I have accepted that only four school board members truly serve me and my children. |
They haven’t officially endorsed anybody, probably because an endorsement from them will tank anyone’s campaign. But of all of the candidates running, Chen’s campaign mirrors APE’s rhetoric the most. |
