Of course we can. Some trashy people here with 2 inch long lime green talons are having some regrets and getting defensive. Fake nails run the gamut from decent looking to gutter trash. Mostly depends on length and color.

Whether it's something like this https://dndgel.com/product/ferrari-red/ or something like this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/535013630733288836/ it's still none of your business.

I will laugh my fat ass off at lime green triangle nails as much I please. They look f'ing stupid.

Maybe work on being less fat before you judge people on their nails?
Anonymous
I'd rather my kids get acrylic nails than ink, but both are stupid trends.

The only trashy thing on this whole thread is women calling other women's body parts "trashy."

Plastic nails are not body parts.

They are part of/a substitute for a nail, so yes they are.

They are no such thing. They are pieces of plastic glued on top of nail.

They are bad for nails and can look tacky. No.

+1000
looks trashy and pretty much only low class people have nails like that.

Truly classy people never speak of others in this way.

That’s definitely not true. They may not say that to your face but they will say it with their friends for sure. And since this forum is anonymous then anything goes.

+1. I grew up super-WASP and I assure you there is a strong code of how “things are done” and how they are not done.

It's cute how you think that your way is the right way and that people are aspiring to be like you.

It’s cute that you don’t think your “style choices” affect your life negatively in any way.

My nails have affected me negatively exactly zero times, other than this ignoble thread. Never lost an opportunity as a result of my nails. Is it a WASP thing to concern yourself with such irrelevant matters? Is it a result of so many women not having careers and therefore having nothing better to do in your circles?

You’ll never know.

I see. Your latest post is as intelligent and well-thought-out as the previous ones.

I can’t make you want to have class. That doesn’t mean you don’t understand. You are simply making a choice.

Are you sure you have class? Or is it something mommy dearest told you? Because you haven't displayed it on this thread yet.

For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who do not understand, no explanation will suffice.

This is a public school thing, I’m guessing? Haven’t seen this at my kids’ private. Thank God.

They are terrible for your health!

Nope, my Catholic school neighbor is very into them.

So too at another non Catholic private. It's everywhere, urban parents!

You’re a teen? With a husband? Or just making irrelevant comments?

Oh she is just trying so desperately to be relevant.

See that's where you make another mistake. I like my nails. My DH likes my nails. I've had them for the better part of 30 years. They were ALWAYS relevant to me. It matters not one iota what you think of them. Zero.

The difference between you and me is that I couldn't care less what you wear. It's your body and you can do with it what you like. It speaks volumes about your character that something as innocuous as my nails is bothering you SOOOO much.

No sane male person likes acrylic nails - they just tolerate them.

Ok, I guess you know my DH better than I do. It kind of tracks with everything else you said

You're so smart.

DP and you are coming off the opposite of how you intend. Unless you intend to sound awfully insecure.

I don't think you like the implication of this thread that so many people out there in real life see your nails and inwardly cringe with disgust. These people don't have bad character, as you want to pretend to make yourself feel better. They are simply care more about hygiene than you do.

Oh please. Again, I don't care what you think about my nails. I'm 46, not some 16 year old seeking approval from every person I meet.

If it's about hygiene for you that's totally fine. Tell yourself whatever you want. But again, that has NOTHING to do with me. Just don't wear them and it's all fine.

The only thing stupider than a 16 year old wearing acrylic nails is a 46 year old wearing acrylic nails.

You look like an idiot.

DP, are you in HS still because at this point you are just reaching for petty insults to sling to keep this going. When you use the words “stupider” and “idiot” in an argument you’ve already lost.

I am the PP who called you insecure, but I did not write the post above. You are responding to more than one person.

You can't win this argument if you are talking about hygiene. Facts are against you on that one. The appearance part is a different thing and simply a matter of preference. If they were not so dirty, many of us wouldn't care about nails one bit. It would be no different than the style of your shirt etc.

Show me the evidence that my nails are inherently more dirty.

Are you unfamiliar with Google? Try searching "artificial nails and pathogens" or "acrylic nails or germs" or however you want to approach it. There are multiple studies linking artificial nails to higher amounts of pathogens. Just one example, since you seem unable to do a basic search yourself. Your nails are dirty. Go ahead and wear them, but stop trying to argue with those of us who are pointing out that they are gross.

"Conclusions: Artificial fingernails were more likely to harbor pathogens, especially gram-negative bacilli and yeasts, than native nails. The longer artificial nails were worn, the more likely that a pathogen was isolated. Current recommendations restricting artificial fingernails in certain healthcare settings appear justified."

The teenage girls in my neighborhood, the daughters of friends, and the girls my son dates - none have fake nails nor do they wear makeup. Most are athletes and high academic achievers. For something like prom they do of course get manicures, style this hair, and wear tasteful make up.

By contrast, in the small rural town where I grew up, the teenage girls typically do have long, fake nails, wear a lot of makeup, and dress in much tighter and more revealing clothing.

As I’ve said numerous times before, I’m not in healthcare so this is not a concern for me. I also don’t eat with my hands and wash my hands like 30 times a day. I’ll be just fine. Probably better than you.

Preparing food for yourself and family involves touching it with your hands and nails. No matter how many times you wash your hands, it does not remove the pathogens living under long fake nails. Nursing with fake nails were responsible for tons of NICU baby deaths, traced to their nails. I’m positive those nurses were washing their hands way more than you do.
