Just wondering if people think this sounds cute or odd. It is a Hawaiian name meaning "the sea." |
I like the name. I would assume that the family has some connection to Hawaii. |
I love it. It also has a long history of use in a number of European countries:
KAI (1) Gender: Masculine Usage: Frisian, German, Scandinavian, Finnish, Dutch Pronounced: KIE (German) [key] Meaning uncertain, possibly a Frisian diminutive of GERHARD, NICOLAAS, CORNELIS or GAIUS. KAI (3) Gender: Masculine & Feminine Usage: Hawaiian Means "sea" in Hawaiian. [www.behindthename.com] It's on the rise in the U.S., (now #205, up from #403 in 2000) so I think people shouldn't find it too odd. |
I like it, although the only person I know named Kai is female.
Cute name for a boy. |
It was on our short list. We went with another name that fit better with the rest of the family names.
As it was on our short list, we were very aware when ever we saw / heard it. It is not common - but you will hear it around. |
There's one (boy) at my DC's school and a colleague has one (girl). I thought in Japan it's a girl's name (maybe China too - Kai Lan!). I like it either way. |
Not my style at all but if you like it go for it! |
Have a cousin with that name. We are black so to me it sounds ethnic. |
I know two boys named Kai, one in fifth grade and the other in third grade. I think it is a nice name. Go for it! |
Sounds very Asian to me. |
My friend has a Kaj which is the Swedish spelling. Her adorable blond-haired boy fits the name perfectly. |
I really don't like it. I think it's become somewhat popular because I know 3 kids under 3 with it, 2 in DS' preschool and a third in the neighborhood. It's pseudo hippy to me. |
Sure fire way to get your kid's ass kicked at school. Repeatedly. |
Knew a Kai growing up and he was an awesome kid & is now a great guy, so I have good associations. He is half Hawaiian, though. |
Love it and would think you listen to Marketplace. |
