I agree with you and was thinking that about a lot of movies mentioned here.

But Say Anything? It’s my favorite rom com of all time. It’s also tagged as a romantic comedy (rom com) everywhere. It just happens to be an actual good one and not lame and formulaic.

Conversely, princess bride is action/adventure; The Birdcage is comedy/thriller; and 500 Days of Summer is a rom-com drama. (Some places call say anything a rom-com drama too, so I guess it’s debatable, but you could also say a rom-com drama is still a rom-com.)

Here’s Roger Ebert calling Say Anything a romantic comedy back in 1989: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/say-anything-1989

“This is one of the best films of the year - a film that is really about something, that cares deeply about the issues it contains - and yet it also works wonderfully as a funny, warmhearted romantic comedy.“

I'd agree with this. Rom Com done well is not Hallmark.

(And I love Hallmark type movies for what they are. But romcom is broader and Say Anything fits IMHO.)

+1 I LOVE this. Bought it on DVD because it was never available on streaming. (maybe is now? I haven't looked in a while)

I LOVE this movie. however if you are thinking about seeing it with your teen daughter or son be aware the first scene is a very explicit oral sex scene. Which is a bummer because I am dying to watch this with my 15 year old son but not sure we can get past that first scene....

I understand not wanting to watch this with your teen son. But I love it when movies, normalize oral sex on women. For most women, this is the main event and yet TV and movies P in V is always seen as the main event with the women having an orgasm quickly every time when we know in reality that is more rare.

I enjoyed this Danish romantic movie on Netflix. NOT a comedy, but sweet and a little angsty. Male lead is gorgeous.

My recs are The Wedding Date, 10 Things I Hate About You, Love & Basketball, Dirty Dancing, Moonstruck, Say Anything, Princess Bride (random assortment).

For an oldie but goodie, The Way We Were (sigh!).

Your girl is lovely, Hubbell.

My all-time favorite.

There was a time before this movie that I simply could not stomach Drew Barrymore and this was the movie that turned that around for me.
She is delightful in it.

I wanted to like this one.
But Rosie Perez and her nasal shrieking combined with the Briget Fonda’s faux-naive overacting opposite Nicholas Cage just….being too sappy even for Nicholas Cage.
It’s was all too much.

Hilarious movie!

There’s another lighthearted rom com Jennifer Anniston one that I enjoyed called Picture Perfect. (With Jay Mohr and Kevin Bacon) turns out she was actually pretty good at the rom com genre……
