Not OP, and not to hijack, but how did you get there? Actually, I will start a new post on this.

I don't know. Better this way than to not "cut the cord" like some. No?

That was me. I reached the point where I realized that the bad things that they did were getting more air time in my life than they deserved. My marriage was becoming a support group about ridiculous conflicts created by ridiculous people.

I knew that I wanted my life to be about the good things, and I knew for certain that my parents and brother would never, ever change-- in character or in behavior. My mother had told me with frightening clarity that she would not accept ANY limitations on her authority with my daughter-- even when I was in the room. As in, if I'm in the room and say "no" to my daughter, my mother can say "yes," and if I tell her that she needs to stop, she can start screaming. She had been crystal clear that there was not one single rule or limitation that she would accede to, and that if I persisted in requesting limits, she would ridicule me in front of others.

My father is a weak drunk and my brother is a 40-year-old closet case who still lives with them, is bigoted about every single group of human beings you can name other than white men, and has never had a significant relationship outside of my mother. Shut her out, and they had to go too.

I have never regretted saying goodbye to them for one moment. This post was the first time in over a year I have wasted any energy on these awful people.

Adopt other "moms" into your life. I had my extended family and family friends - thank God!
