Hyde-Addison

Don't most kids at Hyde-Addison live closer to Shaw than to Murch/UDC anyway?

I'd be very happy with the swing space being in Shaw, because it's easy for my family to get there on the Green Line and maybe it will be less competitive to get in via the lottery for next year! A short commute plus a guarantee of Hardy and Wilson is good news for us.

I would prefer both to Meyer but per DCPS, Meyer is the only site that fits their incomprehensibe criteria. Most of the parents I've talked with in my child's class (we're in PK) favor no renovation over swinging to Meyer. I could care less about expanding the size of the school or having a true cafeteria or gym. Taking the kids out rain or shine would solve that latter issue.

No renovation over swinging to Meyer?

You know that sounds crazy right? Especially when the IB numbers are so low.

The SIT team only came up with two "cons" with regard to Meyer: that it would require busing and is located outside of the H-A community. Well, busing for other schools that are currently in swing spaces is working out just fine and considering that the majority of H-A students are OOB the "outside of the community" argument seems like a bit of a stretch. Compare that with the pros of Meyer. But if your IB for H-A and insist on voting with your feet, that's your choice. I'm sure there will be plenty of OOB families who would be thrilled to take your spot and when and if you return to H-A you'll have overly full classrooms.

We did try the commute:
from Hyde to Meyer, it took us 35 minutes at 8:00 am
From Meyer to Hyde, it took us 25 minutes at 3:30 pm

I would expect it would take more or less the same time by bus. So it is not not desirable but ok.

If it makes you feel any better it can take the Murch kids 15+ minutes to go less than 10 blocks many days on CT Avenue. Everyone survives.

Hyde Pre-K parent here who would rather see them scrap the project rather than two years across the city. FWIW, PK3-K is HEAVILY inbound, mainly because there was finally a community being built around a neighborhood school. The school itself is already fantastic, I don't need or care to have a gym/cafeteria space for a small city school, they have a great play yard. "Pray tell" where another option exists?! Options exist if they were willing to spend 0.01% of the funds they have poured into Duke Ellington, but since we aren't the pet project of an aging socialite they are unwilling to give us anything but a run down school convenient for nothing but their budget. Hope JKLM is ready for an influx, which honestly stinks for everyone.

Are you suggesting that you would move to be in bounds for JKLM rather than drive your kid to Shaw for 2 years?

^ 100%. That or vye for an OOB spot. Both of which would be preferable to driving in/out of the heart of the city at rush hour every day. Or putting a 3 year old on a 35 minute bus ride both ways. But our kids weren't even worth the Duke Ellington FIELD, another scrapped option. (though I don't imagine the sports program is too robust at a Performing Art HS)

Hyde should have never added PS3, which they've had now for what? A year? No other upper NW DCPS has PS3 and the H-A community is just using it now as a reason for not using Meyer as swing space. "We can't bus 3 year olds!" How about this? Do what Gtown residents have done forever, expect for like 15 families at H-A this year...pay for private preschool.

Well you will never get an OOB spot for any of those schools. I did the reverse commute from Logan Circle to Hyde for 6 years and it was not that bad. Plenty of people do that or more every day.

+1 We are on our 7th year of commuting from Columbia Heights to Glover Park as OOB and it has always been fine. I rode a lot longer bus to school in the sticks where I grew up.

The OOB % at JKLM are between 10-20%, I just checked. Never say never

90% of the 10-20% is siblings. Or something. Hard to plan on that.

This thread is a nice reminder of how self absorbed parents of younger students are.

If they swing at Meyer the pre-k 3 and pre-k won't be in busses. They will be in transit vans sitting in car seats/booster seats where they will have a nice nap on the way to/from school. It is funny that these parents are willing to put their 3 year olds in a 7+ hour classroom setting everyday but freak out if their kid has to spend less than 1 hour in transit.

Currently I drive 2 kids to different schools twice a day. The schools are no where near each other. I believe it is worth every minute. Or hour.
