Alyia Gaskins announces run for Alexandria mayor

Amy Jackson has also told AlxNow she's running, although there is no formal announcement yet.

This feels very much like Wilson v Silberberg all over again

I'm no fan of hers but would you say this if it was a man instead talking about having 2 toddlers? I doubt it would even cross your mind. So stop.

Not only would I say this if it were a man, but I say this as a man who stayed home with two infants for two years while my wife stood up a weapons program.

Take your sexism and stick it up your ass.

Whoever promises to build a second HS will win.

Gaskins has policy chops, boundless energy, and not a little charisma. She'll be difficult to defeat.

The cries of "she's too new/green" sound a lot like those I heard in favor of Dole in 1996 and McCain in 2008

Good point. Yeah not sure she's got time to be Mayor nor will she be making sound decisions from the lack of sleep. The meetings go on all night too so not sure how she has time for her kids during the day. At what part do you get sleep?

She's running for Mayor of Alexandria, not for Your Approval Of Her Parenting. Also, her children have two parents, only one of whom is her.

NP here. In Alexandria the mayor has no real power; it is a ceremonial job for ribbon cuttings, etc. It's basically just another city council member, which she already is. The Mayor kind of acts like the "face" of Alexandria, and attends a lot of public events, but no mater who the mayor is, the mayor isn't making policy or important city decisions, ever. That is the job of the city manager.

So your fake outrage is dumb.

Ughhhhh....and about those zoning votes?

I don't recommend undermining the importance of having someone qualified at the helm.

I’m not undermining the importance of being qualified, but this position is not “at the helm” and posters getting upset that she’s be too tired to make all these late night important decisions because she’s got 2 young kids are ridiculous. She’s already on city council. Should no one be on city council with young kids? That ship has sailed.

The mayor of Alexandria is a part time ceremonial gig. It would be awesome if we had a well qualified, executive managerial business/government person as mayor but it appears those type of people don’t want to do it. There is no extra power in the mayor role than being a city council member. People need to stop being triggered and acting like the mayor has all this power like Bowser in DC or Stoney in Richmond. THEY DON’T.

The entire city council election matters. All of them. If you elect carbon copies of the same people (because she is Wilson’s hand picked replacement) you get what you get I guess. And yes, I live here. No I didn’t vote for her.

Hold on - I thought Mayor Wilson was an all-powerful authoritarian dictator, hellbent on the city's destruction?

It legit is a ceremonial job above being on city council and running those meetings. Zero power.

Read here. People need to calm down. And I’m no Justin fan.

But it's not purely ceremonial. You're speaking as if the role has no influence. And that's misleading.

The mayor runs the meetings and hearings, and structures them to achieve an agenda. They can be significantly impactful.

So people who have children at home just shouldn't run for or hold elective office? Okey dokey.

Wilson had very young kids who he first ran, and has had children at home this entire time and no one said anything.

This discussion re parenting is absurd.
