Has anyone gotten MCAP reports from 2023 testing?

It's a state test so wouldn't think MCPS has any involvement.

The state send the info to MCPS. MCPS was giving out SSL hours for students to get the mails ready back in December. They are not mailed from the state, but from MCPS.

Yes, can we get rid of the useless admins and have high school students run MCPS for free?

MCPS should return this junk back to the state. We shouldn't have to do their dirty work.

Someone failed their NSL government MCAP...

I agree they are confusing them with MAP.

MAP is a fine test. I'd pay attention to that not MCAP.

MAP is also an MCPS test, whereas MCAP is a state test. It isn't MCPS job to handle MCAP. If you are unhappy, write your state legislator about it.

MAP is a national test that MCPS chooses to administer, not an MCPS test

MAP is a private vendor test that MCPS chooses to administer.

MCPS has to follow MSDE requirements. And MSDE is requiring MCPS to distribute the reports.

MCPS doesn’t want parents to know how badly their kids are doing in school. Here everyone gets As, and everyone is meeting standards!

Loosen up that tinfoil hat.
Everyone knows that no one's doing great in that test.

There are parents who presume their kid is doing fine because kid gets straight As. MCAP report iis an important data point for them. Even MAP reports aren’t usually sent home — you have to know to go to ParentVue to find it. Not all parents are as in-the-know as DCUM parents.

It is not

Well, it’s important to me. It’s one of the few independent measures we get.

Measure of *what" though?
Says you get a "675 Not Proficient" or a 725 Proficient". What do you do with that information?

If you want useful information, look at their homework/exams or give them a test like Khan Academy where you can see the questions and answers.

Should I be concerned? Kid (8th grade) scores 275 on
Map-M and headed to a math magnet next year and then got only a "3" on mcap algebra - i think 85th percentile. Lack of concurrence is worrying.

I guess we will pay for review over the summer just in case MCAP is the actual "good" test?

I'd be concerned. My kid who started at Blair magnet this year has higher scores on algebra MCAP and lower on MAP than you cite.

Did your child take the Algebra MCAP in 2023?
If so, OP is fine since their kid has a whole extra year of math practice before 9th grade and after Algebra, vs yours.
If not, scores aren't comparable between years.

Nope took it in 7th grade and the results were comparable. I think both years only the top one or two percent got 4s.

So clearly a 4 is not necessary for succeeding at Blair SMACS, because many students with solid post-Algebra MAP scores, and winning state and national level math awards like Mathcounts, AMC, and Kangaroo, are getting 3s.

Actually, it seems like they managed to understand it. Further, the state is perfectly able to mail these out themselves.

Makes me think the test is poorly calibrated.

It's not calibrated at all. Just a pair of context-free numbers.

It seems like if you are one of the kids who score in the top 0.001% on MAP you might get a 4 otherwise 3 or lower on MCAP.

You would think wrong. The state printed them and gave them to MCPS in the fall to send out. They have had electronic access even longer.

The homework/exams are a joke. External exams—MCAP, MAP, AP exams, etc. — are more meaningful

Then why didn't the state just mail them out directly to parents?

Don’t know. But can tell you that I have friends in other MD school systems who got their reports in a timely manner. Only MCPS is incompetent enough not to be able to do this basic function. (They are supposed to mail them out within a month of receiving them.)

MCPS doesn't want to do secretarial work for the state. So deal with it.

I'd think they were incompetent if they prioritized this worthless test.
