USC has just cancelled graduation ceremony

USC announces it is cancelling its main stage commencement ceremony. Comments shut off.

Brutal for the class of ‘24.
Likely didn’t get a high school graduation during COVID in 2020, and now won’t get a traditional college graduation

Now Hamas has taken USC graduation as its most recent hostage.

It is on the politics forum because politics caused the cancellation.

Thanks, Trojans for Israel and Chabad at USC!

Disgusting how our lives are turned upside down by catering to one group with such undying fealty.

If you don’t think these college protest have political implications, then you need to get your head out of the sand.

I'm not prepared to project a red wave of the likes the world saw with 1980 Ronnie Raygun, but this November will set the Democratic Party back 30 - 40 years anyway.

Sad, devastating even. Women and minorities in this country, especially, deserve better than what's coming.

I don’t see how Biden turns it around at this point.

I’ve been busy all day. Has he made any statements?

Hamas has nothing to do with this. A Muslim valedictorian was denied a chance to speak due to pressure from pro-Israel groups. It seems Islamophobia is totally okay. But anything deemed “antisemitic” must be shut down immediately.

In this case, they don't. These aren't the anti-war protests of the 1970s. These are protests about a country and a region on another continent that we are not directly involved in.

Students can ask schools to "divest" and schools won't. Where are the political implications?

Quick question: in the US, how many hate crimes do Jewish people commit?

Answer: zero.

Jewish people may be touchy and oversensitive about antisemitism - but they aren't violent. So it's not a bad thing to protect them from violence and harassment.

BREAKING: USC has decided to cancel their entire 65,000 person main stage commencement ceremony in light of recent turmoil on campus, likely in anticipation of additional disruption and violence. They are also requiring tickets for all smaller graduation events & limiting entry.

USC administration created this problem by canceling the valedictorian preemptively Minority Report-style, likely in violation of California free speech laws.

And I admit this as someone who does NOT think students have the right to set up tent camps in the middle of their campuses. They can protest between classes and go home to their dorms at night.

USC has no one to blame but themselves. In fact, I argue that their cancelation of the valedictorian is what kicked off the nationwide campus protests and tent cities over the past week.
