Loud Phone Calls in Public

Anonymous
I think we have reached a tipping point where people no longer hesitate to make loud phone calls in public. The person next to me on the metro is screaming at her phone, which she has on speaker. She is talking to a kid, yelling stuff like “I like cookies too!” into the phone. Yesterday at Northside Social there were multiple people who were clearly working taking calls on headphones, yelling away into the air in front of them.

I think this is just the new normal now. No one cares if it is rude, and we are sliding into a place where most people are going to be doing it.

I hate it.

Taking calls in public, whether on speaker or not, is so rude. It's one thing if it's a brief call (like a call to confirm in appointment) but people who take calls on the metro, in stores, in gyms, etc are classless turds.

Welcome to America where people think if the person on the phone is far away, they need to shout to be heard.

I don't understand this either. Yelling at someone on speaker seems so unnecessary. To the point of the person above who says it's racist to complain about it, IME it does seem to really break down along racial barriers. Why, I don't know.

Well, fwiw, I'm the OP, and I'm white and so were all of the people I complained about. All three of them white and all three of them looked pretty privileged.

Give it time. Every case I've seen recently were people under 25. I think the pandemic has set the younger generation with the expectation that there is no problem with doing this.

I was on a three hour train trip. A woman two rows ahead of me talked loudly to someone for two HOURS. It was so annoying. Shut up.

I landed at LAX from Japan and was treated to a old white guy yapping away loudly in the gate area for 30 minutes. It was quite the rude awakening after leaving a country of so many people that don't use their phones in public. I agree that it breaks along racial lines for sure.

And what’s with speakerphone/FaceTime without headphones???!! It’s bad enough I have to hear your half of the conversation, lately I have to hear BOTH sides.

I hate it too.

I was in a laundromat a few days ago and while it is not my favorite place to be…..during the day it’s nice to relax w/a good book while waiting for my clothes to wash/dry.

Some guy (older, 40-50’s) sat close to me & alternated playing loud music on his phone along w/watching some obnoxious show.

At times, he would shut everything off and I would be relieved that I could read again in peace but then he would blast stuff again.

It was on + off for like twenty min.
I had a horrid headache 🤕 when I left and had to take a nap when I got home!

What a weird question. Lots of rich people do this, and lots of poor people have courtesy.

People are rude and only care about themselves.
