Loud Phone Calls in Public

I actualy find it easier to hear both side- i think i read once this is because our brains have to work (and do whether we wantthem to or not) to piece together the other side of a one-sided convo

I was in a doctor’s office waiting room the other day, and an elderly woman had a half hour conversation with her friend about an upcoming visit. LOUDLY. I generally try to give elderly people the benefit of the doubt, and this was a doctor’s office for really serious stuff, so plan your visit, I guess? But I could not believe she sat in a crowded waiting room and passed the time by just chatting away!

OP here. Yep, the woman on the metro who was so bizarrely loud as to cause me to post this was Facetiming w/ a friend or sister or something who was putting their little kid on. I heard the whole darn thing.

I was in a laundromat a few days ago and while it is not my favorite place to be…..during the day it’s nice to relax w/a good book while waiting for my clothes to wash/dry.

Some guy (older, 40-50’s) sat close to me & alternated playing loud music on his phone along w/watching some obnoxious show.

At times, he would shut everything off and I would be relieved that I could read again in peace but then he would blast stuff again.

It was on + off for like twenty min.
I had a horrid headache 🤕 when I left and had to take a nap when I got home!

OP here. Ugh, that is even worse than the phone calls.

What a weird question. Lots of rich people do this, and lots of poor people have courtesy.

"Money can't buy you class."

None of the people doing this appear to have money OR class. Or jobs.

No, even this is rude if it's on speaker.

The person next to me on the metro is screaming at her phone, which she has on speaker. She is talking to a kid, yelling stuff like “I like cookies too!” into the phone. Yesterday at Northside Social there were multiple people who were clearly working taking calls on headphones, yelling away into the air in front of them.

I think this is just the new normal now. No one cares if it is rude, and we are sliding into a place where most people are going to be doing it.

I hate it.

I love threads like this which reveal the truth about public transit. Meanwhile, open reddit and it's wackos spamming that transit is some blissful experience and cars should be banned.

That's sadly all old people talk about. Go into a McDonald's from 6AM-9AM and it's all old people sharing doctor's office stories. I guess I can't blame them, it's scary going through health challenges and not knowing if a doctor is taking advantage of you. Most doctors are milking these old people.

It's happening on airplanes too, with alarming regularity. Not just loud calls while on the ground, but watching videos without headphones, etc. Sucks.

I notice this the most in NY. There is a complete disregard for others, and this includes the way people treat each other in general.

My loud mouth uncle got kicked out of an Uber for loudly FaceTiming with his wife. The driver asked him to take the call off of speaker and he was so upset that the driver dared to request basic manners that he yelled at the driver. The driver pulled over and let him out. In the rain and not exactly near anything convenient.

I love it.

Agree. There is no place (other than your home or car) where speakerphone is ever ok.

But people shouldn't even take non-speaker long calls in public. So incredibly rude.

OP here. In my original post one of the problems I discussed was people in a cafe who were clearly on work calls. So ... they had jobs. And the idiot who irritated me on the metro was well dressed and appeared to be coming from work. So.

Welcome to life in a dense big city.

This is why the rich live in rich peaceful neighborhoods, on a parcel as large as they can afford. And fly private.

To justify buying a $50MM Gulfstream jet, televangelist Kenneth Copeland summed up flying on commercial planes, "a long tube with a bunch of demons.” Maybe he was onto something. lol
