Loud Phone Calls in Public

This is why the rich live in rich peaceful neighborhoods, on a parcel as large as they can afford. And fly private.

...and have modern-day servants fetching their to-go food and groceries. And send their kids to private grade schools and private colleges. And join selective country clubs. And only vacation in the "right" spots. All an effort to avoid interacting with the unwashed and annoying masses.

The driver asked him to take the call off of speaker and he was so upset that the driver dared to request basic manners that he yelled at the driver. The driver pulled over and let him out. In the rain and not exactly near anything convenient.

I love it.

OP here. I love this too. So good. So proud of that Uber driver.

The person next to me on the metro is screaming at her phone, which she has on speaker. She is talking to a kid, yelling stuff like “I like cookies too!” into the phone. Yesterday at Northside Social there were multiple people who were clearly working taking calls on headphones, yelling away into the air in front of them.

I think this is just the new normal now. No one cares if it is rude, and we are sliding into a place where most people are going to be doing it.

I hate it.

I love threads like this which reveal the truth about public transit. Meanwhile, open reddit and it's wackos spamming that transit is some blissful experience and cars should be banned.

It's happening on airplanes too, with alarming regularity. Not just loud calls while on the ground, but watching videos without headphones, etc. Sucks.

To justify buying a $50MM Gulfstream jet, televangelist Kenneth Copeland summed up flying on commercial planes, "a long tube with a bunch of demons.” Maybe he was onto something. lol

Lol. Totally checks out.

Noise cancelling only cuts out the white noise, not all sound.

Exactly.

And why on earth would I bring my noise canceling Bose headphones out to dinner anyway? Just in case someone decides to scream at their phone while Facetiming their mother at restaurant? One shouldn't have to do that.

This makes no sense. Do you never go to a store? A gym? A business?

Because that's where these public calls are happening - no one cares what you do in your house or on your lawn.

I read an article in the Atlantic that was about this. The author posited that wanting quiet or silence was classist and that the desire for it is a way to discriminate against others. But people of all kinds are sensitive to noise and we all have a right to some quiet, I think. It's why those open space offices are so toxic.
