Mosaic ES impressions

How is the instructional quality? And how bad is the overcrowding? Is the renovation on schedule? Other thoughts?

(We need to decide soon on sending our child to Mosaic vs. a private school for K).

The school is very overcrowded. The construction is horrible and unsafe environment for students and teachers (noise, odors, workers, traffic and equipment). No schools events until it’s done, which is still a year and a half out.

Instructional quality is highly teacher dependent, and we have only had a couple of good teachers in many years there.

It’s meh. The teachers are meh. The principal is meh.

we ended up staying in our assigned elementary school for the AAP, and we love it, in case your question is being asked in that context. It's always possible that we don't know what we are missing, but I think my kid will catch up if challenged in middle school.

They had plans to build another school in that area but Karl Frisch decided it was OK for Mosaic to be huge. So now the plan is to build a school miles away in Dunn Loring surrounded by under-capacity schools.

Hated subbing there. So, there’s that.

It’s really just so big that to keep some appearance of order, it’s absolutely no fun for the kids. Ridiculously strict rules and no outdoor play space. Small gym with multiple classes in PE at the same time. My kid hates it and I feel so bad about that.

Is an outdoor playground planned as part of the renovation?

Because of the crowding? Badly behaved students? Something else?

Front office staff was rude, abrasive and generally difficult.

Principal rules that school with an iron fist. School overcrowded and that presents its own problems especially with student discipline and conduct.

The principal "rules with an iron fist" yet there are still widespread discipline issues? Does the principal only control the teachers and school staff this way, while letting the kids do whatever?

My kid was there just before covid and our friends are still there. I was very impressed with the principal: she runs a tight ship but nobody seems to think she's unfair. The older kids interact with her well. When we were there, there was strong school community and strong family attendance at events. The one issue we had with bullying was addressed immediately, although I've heard others with less positive experiences. Our classroom teachers were strong but specials teachers were weak imo.

It's a big crowded school, that's its main issue.

I visited their playground often during the pandemic. What happened to it?

100% our experience. Rampant bullying and nothing is done to protect school image. Never are you allowed in the building as a parent.
