Mosaic ES impressions

I visited their playground often during the pandemic. What happened to it?

They are renovating to the point of nearly doubling the size of the school while everyone is there. Recess in between trailers that disrupts classes all day.

Because of the crowding? Badly behaved students? Something else?

Front office staff was rude, abrasive and generally difficult.

Principal rules that school with an iron fist. School overcrowded and that presents its own problems especially with student discipline and conduct.

100% our experience. Rampant bullying and nothing is done to protect school image. Never are you allowed in the building as a parent.

What ages and genders?

This was several years ago, but I echo the post about rampant bullying. My daughter had a terrible experience there that included months of very overt bullying and nothing was done. Super crowded, lots of behavioral issues that went unaddressed.

During the rising K orientation a few days ago, multiple speakers presented with their microphones not working and unless you were in the front few rows you couldn't hear a word they said. No attempt was even made to fix their mics or hand them working ones (the principal's worked just fine). It was... weird. Gave off vibes of apathy or incompetence.

Never are parents allowed in the building? Wait, so you've NEVER seen your child's classroom?

I wonder why the school is so highly rated when the reviews here are so bad? Are reviews driven by academics and demographics?

It has an AAP center that pulls from four elementary schools (Mosaic, Marshall Road, Daniels Run, and Providence).

When my kid attended, they spent an entire month before the SOLs doing “SOL Bootcamp.” This was true even for AAP classrooms. High SOL pass rates = high ratings, even if the school is bad.

This is the saddest thing posted on DCUM today.

I've been in the building: not sure what this person is talking about.

If the kids currently have no outdoor play area, do they have no recess? How is the parental involvement? Quality of communication from teachers? Amount of homework? And how if at all are the culture war hot topics (gender identity, etc.) addressed at this school?

I have been in the building this school year twice to pick up my child early. And was warned to not go past the office. Have never seen classrooms since before Covid.

They have recess in between the trailer rooms or a small open field. No parental involvement. No homework. Little communication from teachers if any. Culture topics, don’t seem to come up much. Can’t if you aren’t ever allowed to talk.

Over all is the situation bad enough that you would definitely opt for private over Mosaic ES? Our child was admitted into a great K-12 private school, but given the expense and inconvenience of the commute there, we also want to thoroughly consider the public option.

FCPS alumna and Mom of 2 FCPS graduates, 2 current students: consider private. Had we had this option, absolutely would have sent all to private and it pains me to say this.
