Mosaic ES impressions

FCPS alumna and Mom of 2 FCPS graduates, 2 current students: consider private. Had we had this option, absolutely would have sent all to private and it pains me to say this.

I appreciate your candor. May I ask the biggest factor behind your saying this? In other words, what is the worst thing about FCPS or Mosaic ES specifically, in your experience?

Precipitous decline in community engagement, academic standards, classroom behavior management, overcrowding, transportation, support for the average student.

I’ve always thought that it was tough to navigate FCPS as an “average ” student without any identifiable needs.

Teaching to the SOL test is common (re: PP SOL boot camp) and shameful. I began opting one of my DC out of SOLs because it was causing too much anxiety - the pressure in early ES is ridiculous. The only time I had even heard from AP at our ES was when I got a call urging me to enroll DC on a before school boot camp to prepare for SOL re take. I opted out. Nope.

Thank you for sharing. Can you provide more specifics? When did the decline occur, and what do you think cases of?

A decline even in transportation? Are the busses unreliable?

Yes. I was curious about that detail, too.

NP here. I have seen DC's classroom during Open House before the school started. I didn't know parents could walk to the classroom anytime just like that. Can they at other FCPS schools?

I know that in daycares and preschools, the parents have a legal right to drop in anytime. Maybe that goes away in Kindergarten? Or maybe public schools are exempt?

So, Oakton HS (which is in the same pyramid as Mosaic ES) is apparently the #4 HS in Virginia now (source: https://dailyvoice.com/virginia/arlington/best-high-schools-virginia-schools-ranked-in-brand-new-list/). Oakton HS has 95% math and reading proficiency, 79% of students take an AP exam, 66% pass an AP exam, etc. How is this possible if Mosaic is so bad? Are the parents in this pyramid just paying for lots of tutoring outside of school?
