Has anyone been following this? H5N1 appeared in cow herds across country over past few days. Today it has infected a human. This represents a significant and unusual zoonotic spillover event, as H5N1 is primarily known to infect birds. This could indicate a new route of transmission or a mutation in the virus, increasing the risk of human infections. It will likely trigger urgent investigations to understand the transmission dynamics, assess the risk to public health, and contain the spread, including measures to isolate infected individuals and possibly cull affected livestock to prevent further transmissions. | Seems potentially bad, but there's absolutely no way anyone will support major public health interventions to respond to this, so I won't worry too much about it because I don't think there's much for me to do. I have masks in the house and got the flu shot last year; if there start to be a lot of cases, I'll wear a mask on the Metro and/or work mostly from home. And if I get the bird flu, I'll probably be sick for a while and then recover, or possibly it'll kill me, which something will some day no matter what. Not worth stressing. |
