WL everywhere - Disappointed and Stressed

Anonymous
DC waitlisted at most of their reaches. Rejected at a couple. Def a top 10 percent student at a top DC private. Counselor's indication was that DC was competitive everywhere and had "as good a chance as any one else from this school" at Ivy. Feeling very disappointed/stressed. Realize that WL has zero chance of moving. Sorry to vent.

What about their targets? Was there a non reach they loved?

Then they go to their safety assuming they got in. Colleges only take so many kids from your top private so that was a huge gamble on your part. Its impossible to guess what each college is looking for and top 10% isn't going to get you into an IVY except if you have crazy money.

WL everywhere? They weren’t accepted at any school they applied to? If so, your CC Office did you dirty (unless you didn’t follow their advice).

WL at all reaches. Accepted at 2 safeties.

And targets?

Kid should have gone to public.

So not waitlisted everywhere. Your kid got into two schools! And waitlists aren’t a complete list cause if you’re on lots, you’re probably full pay if your kid was at private and that’s a big boost for WL.

Exactly, why the drama? Your kid got into two schools and should have applied to more safety.

What are the safeties? I am sure they are fine and maybe we can help you feel better about them.

But I am sorry. This is why kids apply to so many. I can’t blame them. My sons smarter friends are in a similar boat and now wish they applied where he did (and got in in mid Nov).

What target schools did your kid get into?

So your subject line is misleading and indicates a lack of perspective. Your kid’s safeties are someone else’s targets or reaches. Congratulations. It’s time to flip the script for your kid’s sake and embrace the options they have. I know it’s disappointing, though, and I’m sorry.

WLs do move. This is where being at a top private is helpful. Write those LOCIs and get your CC going in reaching out to the schools. If nothing pans out tell your dc to put their head down Freshman year and then apply out as a transfer.

So the child had a bunch of reaches and two safeties, but no targets? Without knowing the schools and stats, it’s hard to tell, but if any were targets it appears in reality they were reaches. The advice to take a second look at the safeties is sound, as they may have been targets after all.

Yes definitely beg the school to take you. That’s a self esteem booster for sure. Offer $$, your firstborn, anything you need to get in. Stop at nothing.
