WL everywhere - Disappointed and Stressed

As the kids would say, "womp womp." Keep it moving...

Are the safeties SLACS? Those are good schools. Or state schools? Either way, your kid should be fine

You are going to set the tone. You need to start talking up the pros of the safeties/targets that your kid go into. Act excited about them. Help your kid get excited about the schools that want them.

This. Our kid had the same thing happen to them last year. At kid’s safety now and kid is super, super happy. There are so many great colleges. Reaches are just that - reaches.

I’m sorry you’re getting attacked, OP. This is a horrible process. Most of us only have the knowledge of 30 years ago when we went to school and the CCO’s are not very helpful. I understand your stress and it is valid. I’m glad you’re DC is in to some safeties. Pick the best of them and maybe a waitlist will move. I also have a “not-so-excited” child. And in hindsight we should’ve made different choices. This sucks and it’s ok for you to say that.

It doesn't suck if the kid has options. This kid has 2 options.
Being in the top 10% doesn't give you much of a chance wiht the Ivy League. Being in the top 1% does.

I'm sorry OP.
There seem to always be a couple of kids at the top private schools who really get he short end of the stick each year.

Some make it off a waitlist by the time all is said and done. I hope this happens to your kid.

Just curious how your private school is responding to this situation. Have you asked your CCO to intervene and reach out to schools to advocate for your student in addition to writing some kick ass LOCI’s? This is crunch time and almost every private college counselor would recommend the school counselor reach out in this instance. WL may move some this year due to FAFSA-probably less than 10% at top 20 universities.

If you look at school Instagrams the last 1/3 or so of the class has yet to post-could be they are deciding but I’m guessing a lot of students in your position and waiting out WL’s at their elite choices. I wouldn’t be too optimistic that many convert but won’t know much until after May 1st!!

You don't know what you're talking about--the top 1% at some of these schools is not even 1 kid (since the class size is under 80) and yet they'll send 15-20 to the Ivies.
It's usually about the 10% of the class that has a solid, unhooked chance at the Ivy League. However it's never a guarantee.

Counselor's indication was that DC was competitive everywhere and had "as good a chance as any one else from this school" at Ivy. Feeling very disappointed/stressed. Realize that WL has zero chance of moving. Sorry to vent.

WLs do move. This is where being at a top private is helpful. Write those LOCIs and get your CC going in reaching out to the schools. If nothing pans out tell your dc to put their head down Freshman year and then apply out as a transfer.

Yes definitely beg the school to take you. That’s a self esteem booster for sure. Offer $$, your firstborn, anything you need to get in. Stop at nothing.

How ugly and unhelpful. My father used to say "don't let the turkeys get you down". I guess he was referring to someone like you.

Agree. It's hard but important. This is the moment when your kid learns that results are not what defines them, which is what will help build the emotional safety to fail when they are independently living many miles away.

Is is tough. It does sting. But we are living in a teen mental health crisis. Convince your child they've been successful and will be successful and that you have more faith in them than this process.

The private school entitlement on this board is insane.

While I sympathize with the kid, I do fault the parents. They have to do their own research, and not rely on any counselor. Anyone going by the stats of a generation ago deserves what they get. Unfortunately, it's their kid who suffers.

Except that the reaches will still be reaches (hence unlikely).

It's a terrible process OP and hard to know along the way if you're getting right. That said, waitlists are handled very differently at different schools - some have a ton of movement, some seem to use it as purgatory. look at the Common Data Set for the schools where DS is waitlisted to see where your odds are best.
