How did you handle p0rn?

Anonymous
8 yr old DS was trying to find tips and tricks for Minecraft. It led him down a rabbit hole and he started searching girls butts. It came up in my Google history. When I approached him - I could see the video from Minecraft that opened the can of worms. His history was of women in bikinis which in my eyes is p0rn atleast for his age. We talked- there were some tears- that he was scared and couldn’t get out of the videos - he was sorry on and on. Have you experienced this and how did you handle it? I told him it’s not appropriate - the ipad is done - he isn’t in trouble - that type of content is harmful and I would hate for anyone to try to film his body parts - butts included.

You need to explain to him WHY it's harmful.

My elementary kids don't have much screen access and when they do it's watched over by an adult.

Yes I emailed his pediatrician for guidance for articles and waiting to hear back. He was in a stem after school program - and Minecraft was the foundational on learning how to program.

Yes I believe I did. What additional thoughts do you have?

The internet is an incredibly dangerous place, and you really need to keep your child off it for as long as you can.

I would not take away his iPad. I would not take away Minecraft although I don’t allow my kid to have any ‘friends’ in it. I have you tube blocked and you tube kids allowed for one hour a day. I block the you tube webpage as well to avoid the Minecraft video prompts. Our school had a good class session on online safety.

I would separate out his natural curiosity about bodies from talking to strangers online. Those are two very different conversations.

I'd explore if he was crying because he got caught and was upset at having his iPad taken away or because he was disturbed by what he saw.

Time to turn on content restrictions.

This is your iPad/account? Go to Settings-Screen Time - Content & Privacy Restrictions. Turn it on, and set what you want to restrict.

You can also consider a second software (Disney Circle, Qustodio, Bark) to block porn.

PSA to any other parents of young kids- put on the content restrictions on any device you hand to them.

Look into bark or other parental controls. Do not give your child unfettered access to the internet.
