What rejections surprised you the most this cycle?

I was very surprised at how many kids with pretty good stats got waitlisted by University of Tennessee yesterday. I was also surprised by some of the FSU and UF rejections.

This is where stupid people who think they are intelligent start talking about "yield protection".

Tulane! Surprised my kid was rejected from Tulane EA. Surprised that she was not even deferred. She was deferred ED from a T10 that rejects rather than defers most ED students. Every school is way harder to get into than we thought, and I am obviously working off old impressions. She did not express interest other than to apply and we need financial aid.

Surprised (but not shocked) my son was rejected UF and not even offered online. He wouldn't have gone anyways. but he is business- GPA 4.8, superscore 33, varsity sports, good EC's etc. Never visited.

My kid was deferred from Tulane. Male. 33 ACT and 3.85 unweighted from a private school. Legacy in the form of grandparent.

Lots of private school kids who did not get into Boulder this year but were deferred.
Very surprised.

No other real surprises

Nothing really. It just solidifies the fact that it’s a crap shoot most of the time.

These should not come as surprises. Many more qualified applicants applying to southern non or less woke university environments.

People need to understand these current realities:

1) many state schools are being bombarded with tons of OOS applications, but that doesn’t change the number of seats they have to offer. Don’t confuse selectivity and great academics with scarce resources. Also, the number of OOS seats are typically small compared to the number available for in-state.

2) seats in engineering and CS are scarce everywhere. Again, that doesn’t mean your rejected, 1500 SAT kid doesn’t measure up, it’s that too many in-state kids wanted the same chairs.

3) EDing to a reasonable match is the best way to combat this craziness. As more kids apply to 15-20 schools, the madness is getting worse.

Sounds like people are running out of topics to discuss

Did you not pay attention to the Northeastern results last year?

Must be yield protection (ducks)

Yield protection is not a thing at state schools but is at some private ones. Typically these are ones that value "demonstrated interest". This is a clue that they might take a slightly less "qualified" (however this is defined) kid over a more qualified one if they think the kid will attend. Only a clue, college admissions is not a transparent process so one can never know can we.

My son was WL at College of Charleston. His GPA was above the average and his SAT was over the 75th percentile. Full IB Diploma candidate, summer jobs, some sports, volunteering and clubs (although not very active). I was hoping to take him over Spring Break to visit. He has a few good options already but we thought this would be a good one for him. It makes me nervous for all the other schools we are still waiting on.
