Husband is going for his PHD in Civil engineering = How the patch together every critical system in your house with masking tape, wire ties and Elmers Glue so it makes in one more year.

My husband is getting the same degree as yours.

In addition, some online Magic Classes to make all the above dysfunction look like a normal, "The American Dream" suburban household right off the cover of Good Housekeeping.

Parents enrolled in the course entitled Old Age: Living at Home Forever but failed the prerequisite of Must Be Able To Walk to the Bathroom without Assistance. Now I am enrolled in How to Find Immediately Available Assisted Living While Not Being on Any Waiting List. Also auditing Parental Anxiety 101: How to talk your Mom off the Ledge Daily

I just graduated from the class "Be on a first name basis with every hospital social worker in my county" after parent's many hospital stays.

We also took the "Get to know your EMT's personally!" class after they had to come get parent up from so.many.falls. (they are great people doing tough work).

That parent recently passed away, so now I'm enrolled in "Help Mom with all the death things". Today's field trip is to the funeral home to get the ashes and to the bank to do bank things. Class snack will be ice cream, after (in Dad's honor, he loved that)

I feel you OP. I have a kid in elementary school, I went through menopause early (age 47) and just completed 9 months of intense treatment for breast cancer. One parent is disabled and living in a facility, the other is getting dementia and is having major surgery in a few weeks.
So in between my remaining oncology appointments, shuffling kid to sports after school, trying to keep a full time job, I’m now flying down to help parent for a week after surgery. Also, parents are broke due to terrible money management and lying to their kids for decades about estate planning.

New graduate intensive just dropped: Semiotics. Will spend the entire semester parsing the New York Times article on genetic Alzheimer's. Course meets nightly from 1230AM to 2AM.

We are taking an intensive seminar in Burying your Parents. It began in January and has featured deaths of two parents, navigating two funerals etc. Thinking of adding a seminar in Abnormal Paychology: what is wrong with these people and why are they arguing about the estate? Didn’t expect the physical education class “sorting through your parents belongings: why do they have so much stuff and why is it so heavy?” The independent study on My mothers Alzheimer’s is also apparently a multiyear course.

I’d like to announce that DH seems to
be auditing some sort of adult learning, non-credit course on What’s Next: Mom’s Rapid Cognitive Decline. He rushed to register before Christmas when FIL dramatically urged all to join at the family home for “one last normal family gathering.”

I can’t recommend this course: there’s no research, reading or even questions asked, just whispered observations and speculations. Also, I think enrollees have to sign some sort of non-disclosure because any time I try to make suggestions or even ask about the class, DH gets defensive and tight-lipped.

DH doing very first field work at the end of the month in the form of accompanying his mom to another neurologist. I’ve had to stop doing outside work for DH - initially I figured we’d be Study Buddies or that I could provide a supportive role here. I’ve completed PhD level work on Geriatric Death & Dying and just have to write my dissertation.

Avoid! Course seems like a scam.

Major: 80 year old parents refusing to discuss assisted living or downsizing from 5,000 sq ft home

Minor: Waiting for 90 year old FIL to cause serious injury or death because "my doctor said I can drive just fine" (additional coursework in: State of his car doors and bumpers strongly suggests otherwise)
