$38k for UVA vs $90k for most of them is tough nut.

Same.

Well, you likely won’t have anything to worry about!

We’ll see. He got into a few 5% acceptance rate schools already.

Mine is at Ivy for less than UMD cost. Great FA for middle class

Doubt it.

Why? UMD is about 30k. My kid is going to Ivy next year for 20k. We are in Montgomery County.

Rejected from Columbia, but in at Princeton! My kid is in a state of shock but is extremely happy and grateful. I am in a state of shock.

I’m sorry, but serious question - why did he have his heart set on these schools? Did he literally not know their acceptance rates?

What a weird question. Many people want things they know they are unlikely to get, and are heartbroken when those things don't work out.

No dog in this fight but my oldest attends an Ivy for $9k less than our state school (UConn).

I don't have kids in college yet, but the NPC's for the Ivies come in significantly below the NPC's at UMD for us. We're a typical middle class family.

Ok, I know it is hard, but I think this reaction is a bit extreme.

That said, ROTC isn’t a bad idea for many to make college more affordable

But, really, I hope your kid can dust themself off and pick the right fit from the multiple yesses I am sure they have. I did and had a fabulous 4 years at a great school and just better all around fit for me in the end.
