Thursday's Most Active Threads
Kid's Activities, January 6 Hearings, and more Relationship topics led yesterday's threads with the most engagement.
In what I think is a first in this series, the thread with the highest number of replies was posted in the "Elementary School-Aged Kids" forum. Titled, "Why does the default activity for kids seem to be sports?", the original poster describes her child who dislikes sports, preferring art, dance, and music. The original poster feels this is an anomaly because other families are heavily devoted to sports. The thread managed 12 pages in less than a day, but since I haven't read it, I can't really say anything about it. I took a look at the last page and see that most of the posts there are about boys and art and music lessons. Since the original poster's child is a girl, I guess the thread didn't stay completely on topic.
The "Political Discussion" forum is very active — generally the most active of all of the forums — but I don't think it has produced a most active thread yet in this series. That changed yesterday with a thread titled, "Jan 6 Committee hearings - 10/13/22" which led in number of views and was second in number of replies. I removed many posts from that thread that were reported as inappropriate, so it probably actually had the most replies for the day. DCUM's userbase, reflecting the DC-area, is predominantly liberal. However, the "Political Discussion" forum has managed to attract every stray conservative in the area plus a considerable number from other parts of the country. Because these folks tend to post incessantly — all the time complaining about how unfairly they are being treated — the forum often seems to be dominated by conservatives. As such, a thread about a hearing that was heavily focused on former President Donald Trump's culpability for the January 6 attack on the Capitol was frequently sidetracked by posts blaming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, President Joe Biden, and other Democrats. One would almost think that it was Hunter Biden speaking at the Ellipse and provoking events.
Many of the top threads tend to come from the "Relationship Discussion (non-explicit)" forum. As is often the case on DCUM, that forum developed in very unexpected ways. I personally have little interest in the topics discussed in that forum and I am always surprised at its popularity. Yesterday, a thread titled, "In the gym" was among the top threads in both views and replies. The original poster (a 59 year old guy) describes being at the gym and noticing women doing workouts with whom he would like to discuss their workouts. He is hesitant because they have earbuds and he believes attention is unwanted in such circumstances. I haven't read the thread which reached seven pages, but I am skeptical that this guy's interest is really the women's workouts. Has he never seen a male whose workout he wants to discuss? If so, did he interrupt that guy for a discussion? Perhaps those questions are answered in the following seven pages but I'll probably never know.
Another thread in the "Relationship Discussion (non-explicit)" forum came in second in number of views, but only eked out sixth in number of replies. Titled, "Spouse Hid My Water Bottle", the original poster describes how she does most of the cleaning which includes putting her husband's things away. Angry that he often can't find those things afterwards, he hid her water bottle under the couch. I can only imagine the replies this thread provoked but, since I haven't read and don't intend to read the thread, I don't know for sure. But, the thought occurred to me that this might be basis for a combination reality TV/gameshow in which a married couple tries to find possessions that have been hidden by their spouse. For instance, "This week Larla tries to find her purse while Larlo searches for his car keys". Whoever finds the item first wins some money and a blender.
