When I first heard that Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg was coming to speak in the Washington D.C. area, I thought: what can an expert on adolescents say that's relevant to me? My girls are barely 6 and 8 years old, and we're (I thought) far from needing a toolkit for parents of teens. But my favorite volunteer cause, the Parent Encouragement Program, is bringing him to town, so I picked up his book, "Letting Go With Love and Courage," and signed up to interview him for a Washington Parent Q&A on his advice for building resilience in children.

Consider me a convert. I am halfway through the book and can already see clearly the seeds that we parents plant in the preschool and early elementary school years take root in middle school and flower in the heat of adolescence. Just this morning, as I walked my girls to school, I spoke differently and pointed out hazards with an eye to the day when they will be walking themselves along a busy road, alone.

I anticipate that Dr. Ginsburg's upcoming talk at the Bullis School, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, will be even more useful. After all, it's geared at parents of children of all ages, not just teens, and I tend to learn better when someone's speaking to me -- as opposed to just via a book. On the following day, Thursday, Oct. 25, Dr. Ginsburg will give a hands-on workshop in Chevy Chase for parents of adolescents -- which might not be quite as useful to me at this stage of parenting. But I will still be there!
