Voices of Shaw: A Modern Homage to Local Greats

Join us for the unveiling of the landmark artwork, “Symphony in DC Major,” commissioned by City Market at O and created by renowned sculptor and third-generation Washingtonian, Zachary Oxman, The massive three-part sculpture, occupying an entire city block, pays tribute to Shaw’s storied history, portraying prolific composer, jazz musician, and DC native Edward “Duke” Ellington; neighborhood namesake and abolitionist Union Army Colonel Robert Gould Shaw; and renowned American Expressionist painter and Shaw Junior High School art teacher, Alma Thomas. Enjoy live music by local jazz & Go-Go band, The JoGo Project, delicious bites from around the neighborhood, a meet & greet with the artist, plus special guests to unveil each subject. Watch the curtains drop and become a part of history at this momentous community celebration.
