Panel Discussion About ADD/ADHD

NOVA’s Medical Education Campus to host discussion on ADD/ADHD and what to do if you think you have it Northern Virginia Community College’s Medical Education Campus will host a panel discussion on Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on Friday, May 30, at 7 p.m. The panel will feature experts on these common learning disabilities, what to do if you suspect you or a loved one is affected by them. The discussion will be held at the MEC, 6699 Springfield Center Drive, Springfield. Parking is free. This event is free and open to the public. Panelists include: •Mark Julian, PCC. Mark is a ADD/ADHD coach for Clearview Consulting in Fairfax, specializes in working with students and adult professionals with ADHD. In 1980, he co-founded Julian Tours and created the region’s first curriculum-based student tour company. Prior to that, Mark attended the Corcoran School of Art and trained and worked in professional theatre in New York City. •Dr. Philip Magalong, coordinator of counseling at NOVA’s Medical Education Campus, Phil joined the faculty of NOVA in July 2012. Previously, he spent 25 years working as an administrator, advisor, counselor, coordinator and faculty member at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University and City College of San Francisco. Phil has a doctorate in education and a master’s in rehabilitation counseling. •Paige Heninger, Blogger, NOVA Nursing student and mother of five children, two of whom have ADHD, Paige herself also has ADHD. •Nancy Van Doren, parent and candidate for the Arlington County Public School Board, Nancy’s advocacy efforts have included participating on the Arlington ADHD and ArlingtonReading Parent Support Groups and a member of the Stakeholder Advisory Board for --more-- Children’s Hospital Research Institute’s for “Community Based Executive Function Intervention for Low-Income Children with ADHD and ASD Research Project.” She also participated as a member of the Arlington Career Center Parent Advisory Committee (2013 - ongoing); Family and Community Engagement Working Group (2013 - ongoing); Arlington Special Education Advisory Committee (ASEAC) (2006-2012), and chaired that committee (2008-2010); Evaluation of Services for Students with Special Needs, Steering Committee (2010-2013); the ADHD Task Force (2008 - ongoing) and others. This important panel discussion precedes local performances of Lisa Loomer’s play, Distracted, which focuses on 9-year-old Jesse whose teachers inform his parents that he may have Attention Deficit Disorder and his parents’ subsequent and comedic attempts to “improve his quality of life.” The play is directed by Ross Heath of the Arcturus Theater Company and will be at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., from June 12 through June 22.
