The Library of Congress will host a special edition of the Young Readers Center weekly story time with Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building, on Friday, Dec. 8 at 10:30 a.m. Hayden, who started her career as a children’s librarian, will read a selection from the beloved Paddington Bear series. Families with children of all ages are invited to visit with Paddington Bear as he joins the Librarian during the reading, poses for pictures afterwards and greets young readers in the Great Hall. Tickets are available for this free event, but are not required. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit this event-ticketing site for more information and to secure your ticket. Entry is not guaranteed. Paddington Bear-themed activity stations will be available from 9 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. in the Young Readers Center, Room LJ G29 of the Thomas Jefferson Building. Paddington Bear is a modern classic children’s literature character created by English author Michael Bond. Since his first appearance in 1958, Paddington has been featured in more than 150 books and 30 languages. Hayden began her career with the Chicago Public Library as the young adult services coordinator and as a library associate and children’s librarian. She has remained passionate about the access of literature to young readers which inspired her decision to permanently open the Young Readers Center six days a week earlier this year. The Young Readers Center opened its doors in October 2009 to young people accompanied by an adult. It provides a Library of Congress experience uniquely suited to younger readers. The center is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday and offers story time for infant and toddlers every Friday (except holidays) at 10:30 a.m. Parents and guardians are advised to check the Young Readers Center website or call the center at (202)707-1950 for information about story time and other activities. Request ADA accommodations five business days in advance at (202) 707-6362 or ADA@loc.gov
