Oman Day

Culture comes alive at Discover Oman at the KID Museum Saturday January 13th! Join KID Museum and Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center to discover Oman, a country on the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Oman is known for its pristine coastline, varied geography, and hospitable people. See below for the exciting Omani crafts and activities.
Workshops
3D Printed Dhow Boat
A Dhow is a traditional wooden-hulled Omani boat. Dhows have been sailed by Arabs and Indians since ancient times to trade commodities across Asia, the Middle East and East Africa. Design your own 3D Dhow using TinkerCad; it will be printed at the KID Museum and available for pick up a week after the workshop has ended. Age: 3th grade and up. Time at 1:30 pm. Kumah
Most men and boys in Oman wear Kumah when they walk outside their homes. A kumah is a round cap adorned with colorful embroidery patterns. Sew or glue your own kumah to take home using fabric with a traditional Omani pattern.
Majmars
Oman is known for its frankincense, an aromatic tree resin derived from the frankincense tree, Boswellia sacra. Frankincense is a product of the ancient world, used for aromatic incense, perfume and traditional medicine. In Oman, frankincense is burned on a clay burner called a majmar. Paint your own clay majmar with a traditional Omani patterns to take home. Come early, we have only a limited supply of majmars available!
Sea Turtle Cardboard
Thousands of sea turtles migrate annually from the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea, and the waters off Somalia to lay their eggs on the shores of Oman. Out the world’s seven species of sea turtle, five species are found in the country. A fishing village called Ras Al Hadd is renowned for its population of nesting endangered green sea turtles. Learn how to use our electric scroll saws to make your own green sea turtles out of cardboard.
Bedouin Pattern Weaving
Bedouins are an Arabic-speaking nomadic people from the deserts of the Middle East. Bedouin women are famous for their weaving skills, creating beautiful rugs and woven cloth. Learn to use our mini looms to create traditional Bedouin patterns and make your own cloth coasters and bracelets.
Omani Clothing
Oman is a Muslim country where people cover themselves to dress modestly and protect their skin from the hot sun. Traditionally, men wear a long white robe called a Disdasha with a Kumah cap to cover the head, and women wear a colorful dress called a Fustan underneath a long black dress called an Abaya. Come try on Disdasha or Fustan and learn to dress yourself like a traditional Omani.
Flying Dhow Boat
A Dhow is a traditional wooden-hulled Omani boat. Dhows have been sailed by Arabs and Indians since ancient times to trade commodities across Asia, the Middle East and East Africa. Challenge yourself to build your own “flying” version of an Arabian dhow out of paper and pipe cleaners and try to fly it inside of our collection of large wind tubes.
Omani Dance
Omani traditional dance, unlike other Middle Eastern dance, is unusual for its African and Indian influences. Come join us for our Omani dance class at 1:00 PM!
