On behalf of Owney the Dog, our famed four-legged friend, the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum cordially invites you our Dog Days of Summer Family Festival! Program activities will take place throughout the museum on Saturday, July 28th and Sunday, July 29th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm both days. Get to know Owney’s story and understand the role that other animals, such as mules, play in our postal system.
Visitors can explore a wide variety of activities including a scavenger hunt, Owney-puppet-making, screenings of the animated short “Owney: Tales from the Rails,” Story Corner, and the “Tracking Paws” map challenge in which you chart some of the 400 stops Owney made throughout the world. We’ll also have an agility course simulating mule mail delivery to the foot of the Grand Canyon and free ice pops while supplies last.
Sergeant Micah Jones from the Amtrak Police Department and his partner Summer, a female yellow Labrador, will demonstrate their K9 patrol routine at 11 am and again at 1:00 pm in the Atrium. On Saturday, the Homeward Trails Animal Rescue will hold an adoption fair on the museum’s outdoor terrace with rescue dogs and cats who are looking for their forever homes.
Free - all ages welcome!
