Diabetes is one of the most pervasive diseases in the United States, using up one out of every five healthcare dollars in the country and culminating in nearly $320 billion annually. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) predicts that by the year 2050, 1 in 3 Americans will be living with diabetes. In DC alone, 12.3% of the population suffer from diabetes. On Saturday September 23, 2017, the ADA National Capital Area will hold the DC Step Out Walk & Tour de Cure at the Washington Monument to raise funds for diabetes research in the DC region. Across the National Capital Area, the ADA has helped more than 200,000 individuals and families living with diabetes. Through research, education and advocacy, the ADA is working to prevent and ultimately cure this disease. Over 3,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event. The event’s bike portion -- titled Tour de Cure -- will feature three cycling routes for anyone from beginners to seasoned riders and offers one of the only closed-course bike rides through the DC area. The walking portion -- titled DC Step Out Walk -- is a 5K presented by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. There will also be on-site entertainment, Kids’ Zone, a health and wellness expo, and much more.
