For the role of Small Alison and Christian we are willing to see actors as old as 14 who read younger. For the role of John we are willing to see actors as old as 10. We are open to casting more than one actor for each role for the sake of flexibility with scheduling.

Note on Ethnicity:
Because Fun Home is autobiographical, we are looking to cast white actors for these roles in order to accurately represent Alison Bechdel’s life. If you are interested in being seen for other productions at Studio, please visit our website for more information on submitting.

Dates:
• Rehearsals begin on April 13, 2020
• Performances begin May 13, 2020
• Last performance is on June 14, 2020 (with a possible extension until July 19, 2020)

Synopsis: When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Alison relives her unique childhood at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home (the “Fun Home”), her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires.

Rehearsals/Time Commitment
We are committed to casting local young actors and are willing to collaborate with parents to accommodate to school schedules.
• Rehearsals will be in the afternoon/evening Monday-Friday, and earlier in the day on Saturdays
• Sundays will be a day off
• There will be some day time rehearsals during tech/previews: May 6-17, 2020

A Note About Content:
Fun Home is a funny, moving, and intense musical. It includes a complicated and verbally abusive relationship between a father and his children, depicts homophobia that Alison experiences when she comes out as a lesbian, and examines the troubling experiences of Alison’s father, a closeted gay man, including allusions to his sexual relations with teenagers and his implied suicide. Our rehearsal process will be tactful and respectful of our young actors' experience. We will have a dedicated child supervisor at each performance, along with an assistant director and stage management team that will support as well throughout the process. We will gladly share the script with you to help you gauge whether this material is suitable for your child and are happy to speak with you about any concerns you may have.
